Triumph TR6 - What now??

OK, almost last item for disassembly...got the diff removed, now for the brake and fuel lines and the frame will be ready for the sand blaster. What do I do to the axles beyond replacing the rubber boots and the U joints? I had not really planned on rebuilding the hubs since the original mileage is about 70K, but I'm open to that should that be advisable. I'll likely rebuild the lever shocks (or have it done) rather than convert to piston tube type shocks on the rear. Still pondering whether to replace the spring and what shocks to mount on the front. Anyone care to chime in and offer some much needed advice? Thanks.

Since the diff. is out, it pays to change or rebuilt everything now that you have easy access.

GoodPart hubs to remove the vision of the possibility of an original axle breaking and the wheel falling off. Replace diff axle and pinion seals,and drill&tap for a drain plug.

When I took my diff out last summer I replaced both side axle bearings and seals and the pinion seal. I had to get the local shop to press the old bearings off and the new ones on and I had them drill and tap for a magnetic drain plug.I did not replace or disturb the pinion bearing as it's reputed to be a problem to get everything back together to spec and I had a spare 45,000 mile diff so I took a chance. No more leaky diff and no noise so it appears everything worked out well. Like Berry, I am a little concerned about 36 year old axles breaking but I'm still driving on 'em :0)
Goodparts hubs might be a good idea if you have the bucks as is Don's plug for the Nissan diff but that old diff you have is still pretty robust apart from those old axles.

The subject of hub failure was a hot topic on the 6pack form a few years back. At that time I was able to glean at least 6 first had experiences (there has been more since)of outer axles breaking at the base of the threads and the wheel coming off. Fortunately, most happened at very low speeds. The axle problem has existed since almost the start of production, but only on competition cars. Kastner used some sort of modified hubs from a Corvair as a fix. Now broken axles are happening on street driven cars. Maybe caused by age,wider stickier tires, or driving style. The Goodpart hubs are not that much more than rebuilt ones and are much stronger. If I was rebuilding hubs and using old axles, I would be very concerned about the liability.

This is how I just fixed the side axle problem; will drive the TR6 a little less, but keeping it.

Don, Richard's kit is a mite over budget. Yeah, I know when did I have a budget? But I gotta get realistic. Maybe in a couple of years, I'll upgrade to the Nissan 200 when I find some corvair axles somewhere!! Ordered the diff reinforcement kits. First things first!!

You could buy new outer side axles from Moss or TRF; about $190.00 ea. I understand those are the ones subject to failure and not the inners, however, I stand to be corrected on that. Considerably cheaper than new, complete hub units too. An interesting thread to start might be one to get some input on just how potentially dangerous the old hubs are and should we all be seriously considering replacing them.

OK, I'm back with some of the same questions. Talked to Apple. They'll rebuild the lever shocks. New springs from TRF and put minimum in Diff with new bearings and oil seals. So what about the hubs and the axle. My bias is to clean them up well, paint to rustproof, replace the rubber and reinstall!!! Anyone who's done a frame off have any experience to share w/r to the axles and hubs? I'll have new nylatron bushing throughout, but have no reason to expect that the hubs or axles are a problem (yet) and they'd be expensive to replace. A down the road project might be to replace the diff with the Nissan and install Richard Good's CV axles with heavy duty hubs, but the original design has worked for a very long while w/o upgrade and I do not anticipate racing type stresses on the vehicle so somebody chime in here and offer some critical observations/comments. Thanks.

Oh, yeah, steering rack, replace outer tie rod ends; examine inner, clean, paint and replace rubber!! New stub axles though and associated rebuild of front hub with new bearings etc. Not so big a job as the rear. For the rest of the front, replace rubber with nylatron, clean and powder coat metal surfaces and reinstall.

Hubs and axles are a shortfall on these cars
In racing that part failed and Ted used Corvair to fix it.
Now you are not racing but think of this Doug.
They are 41 years old and do you want to take a chance on em?
