Triumph TR6 - What rpm should I be changing gears
Hi, I just purchased a 74 Triumph TR6 4 speed, and there seems to be some discussion as to what RPM range I should be shifting gears, any suggestions? |

Maximum torque on the standard engine is at around 3500rpm. Above this rpm torque , and hence acceleration, falls off. So selecting gears to keep engine spinning in this region optimises accleration. But, as each gear change costs time, the minimum time to cover a given distance needs to take this loss of time into account. Its all relative anyway........ |

I've found that they like 2800rpm going up and coming down. I drive daily in the heat of Tennessee and I work my car, and I feel she likes it. feed back please! |

That sounds about right, as they guy I purchased the car from suggested I never rev over 3000 rpm when changing gears. But I have found that on the highway, I rev at approx 3000rpm at 60 miles/hr (no o.d.). Both the guy I bought the car from & my insurance agent suggested I should drive the car like an old man so I haven't pushed the car too much over 60 miles/hr. But I must say I have been tempted, what do you think? |

Hi, I usually change at 3.5-4,000 and for 25 years my TR6 seems to enjoy that. One point that is important, never change it at low RPM as despite the engine has good torque, it adds strees to engine to work at low RPM. I frequently drve on highway at 4-4,5 RPM for hours and the car could handle that perfectly. Cheers, JGC |

When I'm driving on the highway I change gears at 3000rpm's. I'v got an electric tac on top of my steering column (i'm running a mallory distributor in my '72 with a 4 speed)and I know that at 3000rpm's I'm going 70mph and at 4000rpm's the speedo is bouncing somewhere between 90 & 100mph. |

WOODY YOU MUST HAVE OVERDRIVE DON |
DON KELLY |
No overdrive Don, just a 4speed. I've thought about ordering a supra 5speed for her but then i decided to do an engine conversion later this year (rover 3.5 v8) then hook up a supra 5speed. Imagine enough horse power to hook up an A/C unit, no oil leaks and better gas milage. |

Woody why bother with the Rover 3.5(the engine was made for Buick Pontiac and Oldsmoblile as well) A ford 5.0 is almost the same dimenions as the engine your considering and has over 300hp ,no oil leaks, cheaper to buy parts for and doesn't leak. Check out http://members.aol.com/danmas/examples.htm This site will open your eyes to what is possible. Christopher2 |
