Triumph TR6 - Where is everybody?

Is my system down or did everybody's quit?

Been wondering that too!

A couple of people are doing full resto's but not much else. Someone needs to do an engine rebuid...that always brings out a lot of questions.

I'm not doing anything with mine this winter except sitting in it and making fake engine noises once in a while.

Yes it as been really quiet.

With the car in winter storage after having just purchased it in September, right now I am just reading the threads and learning in preparation for a few upgrades in the spring. In my plans are electronic ignition, replacing the muffler - the car came with a very noisy flow through system, the mod to allow twist on oil filter and I also need to clean up the electrical system which is a little bit of a mess.

Looking forward to spring even thought we got over a foot of snow this week.

Ok, so I am doing an engine rebuild. Rick C. & Chris T. were kind enough to help pull the engine out before Christmas, and tear it down. Since then, I have had the head completely redone (professionally), but have done no more. I will need help to measure end float, (I do not own proper gauge). Also how does one determine if cylinders need to be bored. I also assume that cylider measurement must be taken before ordering new piston rings.
Cheers

Haha Henry thanks for the laugh...I sit in my car now and then but I'll try the fake engine sounds next time !
All I've done is install SU's and break one of the mixture screws...so off they come to fix that !

Pete- Rick doesn't have a dial gauge? check on it. If your going to use stock pistons then you buy stock rings. If you buy bored over pistons they shoud come with rings.

My rebuilt engine got put back in my car today! Tomorrow, we, actually Clive, are putting the manifold back on, the carbs, etc., and going for a ride.

I think its quite because all the Canadians haven't come out of hibernation yet. The rumor is that one of them came out, saw his shadow, and they all went back to sleep for 3 more months!

The weather is great down here!

I'm doing a full engine rebuild but will probably have to tell the wife the $$ are for angioplasty or something equally critical. The $$ I spend on the TR6 are getting to be a sore point. BTW, I'm not going with line boring but will continue with plans to use Goodparts GP2 cam with many new parts. I had one reply suggesting shaving the head for increased horsepower but may not go that route with this spare engine. I can do it later if I want. I will begin the teardown and rebuild of my original, matching numbers 1976 engine as soon as the '74 engine is done and installed in my '76 and the long-range plan for that "stock" engine is the full treatment, including GP2 cam, roller rockers and all the other good stuff but that will be a long term project. I am not too concerned with the modifications changing the car's pedigree from a totally stock, matching numbers restoration to a modified original with updated powertrain. Why not bump the horsepower up over 106 with a few mild mods? The idea is to get the cars to perform like they should - they are not Barrett-Jackson trailer queens. My two cents worth anyway.

I had a spare engine as well when doing my rebuild. I used it mainly for reference and as a spare if I really screwed something up. Now it sits. I am keeping it just in case. A little insurance for me.

Interestingly I picked it up cheap. It was sitting in a garage on the floor for 10 years. Apparently the guy just pulled it from a 74 TR6 and left it. When I got it home and on the stand I drained the oil. It came out black first then gray and then water. I was afraid to open it up. When I got inside I was suprised at how nice everything was. The crank journals were perfect. Looked like the original Vandervelle bearings.. not even worn into the copper. I only found slight surface rust on the bottom wall of one of the cylinders that wiped right off.

I have a nice spare engine that I may rebuild sometime just for fun.

Yes Rick has a dial gauge....and Pete knows this:) I think the comment from Pete was a "nudge" to me. I did say to Pete he could borrow it. I guess I will have to take it down to him and perform the test.
BUT a better idea would be for Pete to host the 4th annual BBSers winter get together. That way he will have bunch of guys helping out.
What do you say Pete?
Went out to dinner with Mike Crane and Dennis Baxter last night. We had a few "points" also:) Swapping a few tales. This summer their club is having a meet at an air museum where the Spruce Goose is. The meal will be under a wing. Saw a pic of a meet there in 2004. The building is HUGE! You guys out here on the West coast sure have some nice roads to go on trips. Beautiful country. Dennis brought his TR6. Kinda nice to hear the sound of a TR this time of the year. Mie said to say hi. Left Mike a couple of TR6 CDIIs... now it should be called TR6 DVDII. 870MB on it. To big for a CD. Mike will pass it on to club members. See you later this week.

Rick C.....
Isn't it time for a ROAD TRIP?!?!? This event isn't limited to club members. Wife and I are going to run to the coast for a day before or after the event, since we have a couple of extra days. PTOA is going on down the Oregon Coast (I think I read that in the newsletter) and Tyee Triumphs (Seattle) are going on a "Great Lodges" Tour, thru southern Idaho and then north along the Canadian Rockies...Not sure of the exact route planned, how far north, but I assume into Canada....? Last year's 'furthest distance traveled' winner drove his TR3 from Charleston, Illinois! We need to all be there when Don Kelly drives his TR6 in, right??? C'mon, Don, we're rootin' for ya!

I am not brave like Don Elliot and drive my car 5000 KM/ year on one trip. Why a day before or after...why not THE day of it?
Very interesting that a Triumph club out here has 200 members. Lots of TR4s, 5s and 250s.

Had a great visit with Rick Crawford last evening. Treated him to a few of our local micro-brews. Really enjoyed swapping photos and TR horror stories. Too bad it is so far to Rick's place in Ontario. Bet it would be a great summer drive. Don and Rod-the hotel (Red Lion) adjacent to the air museum is filling up fast. The next nearest lodgings are around a mile away. I would recommend early reservations. Go to portland triumph.org for details. We really feel that the ATDI at the Evergreen Air Museum in August will be one of our best. Looking forward to some driving weather, it has been such a soggy winter here in the northwest.
Best to all you.

Well Don, it is about time you drove it instead of building an indoor parking lot.

Mike,
I think we made our reservations over a month ago. I keep returning to the scene of the crime, as we lost an engine a couple of years ago at the coast and had to tow the 6 back to Boise. We stopped at the Evergreen Air Museum on the way home from Depoe Bay, and even tho I was about as down as I could be, had a pretty good time there. I asked my wife if she was going this year, she says definitely! (I had too good of a time last year, she wants to keep me in check...just look for the picture of the open trunk (boot), Idaho plate 6974...that's why)http://www.tyeetriumph.org/images/photogallery/atdi%20olympia%202005/index.htm

Rick: We'll go to the coast before or after cuz I don't want to miss any of the fun during the event! Had a great time in Olympia last year, I'm sure PTOA will do it up right this year!

Don: Get out to the garage, and git goin' on that car! And to answer the thread, I spent evenings the last week doing the Goodpart Trailing arm brackets and Nylatron Bushings. Car is back on the ground, but the rear end has taken the stance of a VW dunebuggy...got some adjusting to do!

Thank you for not mentioning I had about 7 beers in less than an hour:)
Yes It was nice to meet you and Dennis. Thank you very much for your good ol' west coast hospitality. I really do envy you guys out here. You have such nice scenery to drive in. Evergreen sounds like it will be a very good meet.
Where I live is 2 hours north of Toronto where most LBCs live. BUT, there is a chap up our way that I met at last years British Car Day (owns a very nice TVR) who wants to start a club in our area. Unfortunately I missed the first meeting on Monday. Will be good to have a bunch of LBCs out for a cruz.

Enjoy Evergreen guys and someone needs to take a "photo-stitch" of the front of the museum with the LBCs lined up.

Rod, when I see Don K this week I will nudge him for you.

Hello all,
The tear down of the 6 has been on hold due to excessive travelling for work and the fact that I need to re-wire the garage for the new compressor and welder that came at Christmas.
The rolling shell is in a non-heated garage and the rest of the car is either in my basement or attic.
Up until last week, the weather was bearable but it still sucks working in the cold and dark.
I have noticed more parts coming available on Ebay lately.

Tom,

Were you able to locate a frame? I think it was you looking for one.

Ebay was a great resource when I did my restoration.

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

Hey Henry!
I have several leads on frames however getting them back to Connecticut is becoming a challenge. I will eventually have to lift and strap the frame down to the roof of my Dodge Caravan so I can get it home.
I can also repair the existing frame but those trailing arm members are a mess. Just poking around with the screw driver has turned them into swiss cheese.
