Triumph TR6 - Wind Blocker - How Effective?

Has anyone had experience with the Moss Wind Blocker (http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=34398&SortOrder=1)? In particular I’d like to know:

1) Does it work, and how effectively?
2) Is it a solid fit in the car? How easy is it to install and remove?
3) Will the top go up with the blocker in place as advertised?
4) Will it fit in the trunk for storage?

I’ve searched the forums without much success so any comments are welcome.

I haven't had any direct experience with this item, however, I made one for an MGB and it was reasonably effective - it could have had taller glass (my design error). I believe that air still pours in from behind underneath unless a vinyl or similar partition is fitted between the windblocker and the floor. One of the contributors posted a a photo of such an arrangement.

LOL! I love it! My neighbour who "made" me buy my TR6 just got his "B" back on the road last week (ever seen a '75 rubber bumper B turned into a lowered chrome bumpered '69 B?)and it'd be great to show him the error of his ways!

Don, what are the mirrors in the image you posted. They look retangular and are on both sides. Any ideas? My original chrome bullet mirror needs rechroming or replacing and I'm looking for options. Thanks.

I bet that wind blocker is effective, it would be irritating MG drivers at the very least.

The mirrors in the picture appear to be the TEX brand units that were intended to be fitted to the Triumph, MG and Austin products starting with the 73/74 models. While they did get used for the most part on the MGs and Austins, Triumph dealers did not seem to use them as much, they tended to continue with installing the after market bullet mirrors or the bullet mirrors sold under the BMC/BL HAC part number series. The mirror heads and bases themselves were the same shape but used different mounting plinths to match body work contours between the various cars.

I don't know that Roadster sells those mirrors, but seem to recall Moss having them. They can also be purchased out of the UK at places like Rimmer. They were sold two ways, the most common was a bright finish, but they also appeared in black finishes on post 75 cars. When I have seen them on Triumphs it was usually on Spitfires with bright up to and including 75s with 76 on using black. I don't ever recall seeing black ones on a TR6 but have seen one or two TR6s with the bright ones.

Steve is right
I think you can Google Tex as the company in in the UK and there are other dist. in USA
DON KELLY

Don, Steve, Thanks. Can they be effectively painted body color?

Doug,
The head of the Tex mirrors is a stainless steel stamping. Rough it up a bit and the paint should stick. The bases are chromed zamac (pot metal). They will be more difficult to scuff up enough, but should come out ok.

If you're going to paint them, maybe consider used (pitted) ones. They usually change hands for short money because the chrome is bad.

Tom, thanks for the info. May be worth a visit to Ebay.

I been thinking of changing the mirrors on the 8 as I think they are a little small and rough looking. Doug thanks for asking the question for I would not have thought of them.

Talk about you guys hijacking Mr. More's thread.

W,
Atached is a pic from one our members here. I am surprised Charlie you have not posted to this thread. The pic is Charlie's first attempt at a wind blocker. You will see he added a vinyl as a skirt to it. Charlie has said it makes a big improvement on less wind buffering. Does not look hard to make or add it on.

if you go to the ARCHIVES above and look at 2007 you will see a thread about the wind blocker there.

Thanks for helping to get this back on track, Rick. Lots of good information about wings, but that's not what I'm looking for. Subsequent to posting here I was referred to this link http://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/Windblocker.htm which gives a great description. The main issue is the inability to use the top boot as is however there's a workaround shown.

Anyone out there with a spare top boot? Doesn't have to be in great shape as I'd just use it when the Blocker is on.
W More

There's one on eBay right now
DON KELLY

Don, I'm probably blind but I've searched "top cover", "top boot" and "tr6 top" and can't see it. Would you mind posting the link?

Hi
Not sure I like the idea of having two rear covers plus it the look of the bracket going thru' it.
Here's mine which works well (according to my wife)I t does stop the buffeting around the head and shoulders...whichever method you choose will need the bottom part as that stops the wind coming down between the seats.
I'm still in the design and play stages but I'm getting close.

Charlie,Will you offer up the plans for your windblocker?  I find it a much better design than whats offered commercially.  If you wouldn't mind sharing the measurements, I'd like to build a copy of yours.

As you can see Charlie's WBv2.0 is much better and cleaner. No need for holes in the top cover. If I am not mistaken, the top can go up with the wind blocker still in place (Yes Charlie??)
Another thought for the bottom skirt is that "mesh" material with fine holes in it. GOOGLE "mesh wind blocker" and you will see what I am talking about. It will stop the air but will allow the sound from our rear shelf speakers.....some times I just gotta crank up a good tune! Anyone know where one might but this material?

Yes Charlie, I am second in line to buy your plans with material list.

Oh Ya, W, you can see we are a friendly group of guys and for the most part, we are on a first name basis. So what is your first name?

By the way the 71 after Rick's name is his age. My moniker should be Don 32

Yes Rick it stays in place with the top up, I'm working on using the mesh in place of the lexan glass,
it's hard to find something to make a frame and hold the mesh tight.
Rod I don't have anything on paper but I'll gladly put the measurements on the pix

The problem with these young people now-a-days is they just do not pay attention.
Don 32, take a look above about 5 posts ago and you will see that Mr. More asked you a question.
Care to answer?
