Triumph TR6 - Windshield Replacement

On a gloomy gray Sunday morning after coffee...

On page 47 of the Spring Summer 2010 Moss Catalog the "how to" re swapping out a windshield seems simple enough but I'm from Missouri on that. Is it really that easy to do? Anyone have experience doing this? Or, should I go to the pros once I have the glass and trim bits? Drakes (Kelowna, BC) have a sale on so I'm tempted to order.

Ken

My new glass from 3 years ago has already delaminated with semi circular fogging and sunburst shapes coming in from three sides. That kinda stinks don't it.
Ken Shaddock

Hi Ken,

Coincidently, I am looking at doing the same thing. Looks easy from what the cat says...the windshield that is failing...did you get that from one of the big Triumph suppliers? If so, I want to stay clear. Shawn
SSD Mr.

I paid the $50 bucks and had a professional do it.
DON KELLY

I didn't want to even try. If I broke it I would have been pretty upset. I let the professionals do it but of course from reading Don's post, as in everything else- we Canadians get gouged. $100 for me.

Mike, 2001 prices

Shawn... not sure of the source. The chap who did the body and paint installed it before I agreed to buy the car. He promised a replacement but that did not happen... a long story.

Okay... I've ordered the parts and will let the pros do the install at the local LBC shop (formerly a BL Dealer). It'll cost about an hour to an hour and a half of labor at %79/hour plus parts.

K

PS. I've set my limit at $50K for this $25K car. I just want you to know that I'm not foolish with my money. ;)
Ken Shaddock

Ken, why not take it to a windshield place. You wouldn't go to a foot doctor to have your teeth cleaned.
Bet it is cheaper
DON KELLY

Ken

Sounds like you have come to the realization of owning British cars. -50% return on investment. Best investment you'll make.

I had my windshiled done by Apple Autoglass 2 months ago. I provided the naterials. They provided the labour. $100.
Michael Petryschuk

I contacted Apple Auto Glass here (Orillia) and they wanted 3.5 hours of labour at $65 / hour! Ouch. Sounds like they did not want the job.

I'll stay with the former BL dealer in Barrie. They have remained LBC specialists since the 70's and service all makes formerly of the UK. They get great reviews in this neck of the woods. Looks like it'll cost me $100 too Mike.

For the Ontario based guys I'll mention that they order parts weekly from Moss and their current prices (a moving target due to exchange) is Moss Catalog X 1.2.

Good choice Ken. Not really a job to tackle under the shade tree.

at "3.5 hours of labour at $65 / hour" I would have ran out the door!

Rick
Rick Crawford

Welcome back Rick... we missed you.
Ken Shaddock

How you doing Mr. Crawford?

$100 bucks Canadian, what's that like...
a buck 380?
DON KELLY

It shouldn't take 3.5 hours to do the windshield. I should mention though that I took off the rear view mirror, visors and wipers to save Apple the time and $$.

An experienced guy can probably do it in an hour or less if all else is out of the way.
Michael Petryschuk

I just brought him the windshield.

A good install thinks the rest of the car is a waste
DON KELLY

Dropped the car off at Cullingford Motors in Barrie yesterday. As a former BL dealer the place feels / smells LBCish with old signs, LBC's everywhere, a TR6 on the hoist originally sold at the dealership in the 70's, a nice LBC parts counter, Moss catalogs for every LBC along the wall in racks, people who talk LBC, the smell of grease & oil but a VERY clean shop. The 70's BL dealer principle Brian is still there and is a hands on owner who does much of the carb work himself. Outside there are MG's, Jags, Healeys, TR3's & 6's, Land Rovers, and some really old Brit tin.

For better or worse my baby is locked in their overnight compound nervously waiting its turn to see the doctor.

How sweet the sound and feel of a smooth running TR6.

I just picked up my car from the former BL dealer I spoke of above after they did several small fixes and some diagnostics plus carb work. This was the first time I'd had a serious LBC carb guy work on the car. Why did I wait so long!!! Some things are worth the money and this was one of those days.

The hot idle is back down around 900 to 1000 rpm, the acceleration is smooth, the car seems to run better on the highway, etc. One and one half hours of carb labor and testing was worth every penny.

Ken - All Smiles!
Ken Shaddock

Enjoy Ken- that is what it is all about.
Michael Petryschuk

You bet Michael. I think I'll let the LBC pros do more and me, well I'll just do the small stuff and enjoy the hobby. These guys can get more done in two hours than I can in a week.

Now where's my Piggy Bank?
