Triumph TR6 - Windshield Seal

I removed the windshield to replace the 30-year old rubber seal and noted that both the glass and frame channels had some black goop in them. Is this necessary on the reinstall (doesn't seem like it would be)? If so, what is this stuff and were can it be bought?

Also, can the plastic chrome trim strip be installed after the windshield is in the frame?

Thanks!

Rick O, 1st yes the plastic strip can go on after I beleive it should had to replace mine last year(it shrunk). The black goop is I think the common weather strip sealer I think it comes in yellow and black goop colors. Don't have 1st hand knowledge if it should be on both or not.

Rick- Have a glass guy install doesn't really cost much. I know it's fun to do everything but somethings it is nice to farm out.

Thanks. I'm gonna try this first myself with my son. If that doesn't work, off to the glass man! I've done it before on a different old car and it wasn't easy, but it eventually went in with the help of cord and some strong hands.

The "Black Goop" was not a factory installed item, nor an available option.

However, it was often installed several years after the cars left the factory by their owners in order to prevent windshield leaks, as the rubber gasket slowly dried out and shrank.

Personally, I would not use the stuff - I'd get another windshield gasket - the choice is yours.

Also, the chrome plastic strip is used to lock the windshield in place - it MUST go in after the windshield in in place. You shouldn't be able to get the windshield in with the chrome strip in place. I recently removed my chrome strip - it pretty much cracked up as I removed it - I will replace it with a new one as well as a new gasket upon reinstallation.

Now - Triumph did use a black goop adhesive to hold the metal strip to the bottom of the side windows. Don't confuse this with the windshield.

Rick,
Don gave me the same advice-let the glass guys do it-about a year ago, and I should have listened. I tried with my son, and got the gasket down to the last 5-10 inches. Pushed a little too hard on the corner and... 'pop'. Admittedly it was my first try at this, and you might have some experience. But he's also right that the installed price is not much higher than to buy the glass alone. The goop is pretty nasty too.

Good luck whichever way you decide.

The advantage of the black gunge is that it works even if the windscreen surround has rusted away in places. Removing the windscreen can reveal more problems than you want to know about!.
Come to think of it that could apply to many places on a TR.
