Triumph TR6 - Wiring harness differences
Hi to all on the BBS Well my 1972 is finally starting to see some Damson Red at the body shop so I should be reassembling soon. I wonder if anyone can tell me whay if any difference there is between a main wiring harness for a 72 or a 73 Thanks in advance for any replies Regards John |

John, There was a significant change in the wiring in '73. Go to http://www.advanceautowire.com and click on the stock schematics button to download a set of wiring diagrams for the TR6 and you can see the differences. |

According to Bentley the '72, 3 & 4 US models were the same. They only have one wiring diagram for all years of the non-US, left-hand drive cars. If you are thinking of using a harness from another vehicle, I would 'ring-out' the harness by checking the continuity of each wire before actually installing it in the car. Carefuly check all of the bullet (Lucas) connectors to insure that they will be tight when put into use. Also check all the ground connectors for rust or tarnish that could weaken the connection. While doing this you can also use your wiring diagram to mark each connector as to what it attaches to or what it powers. Getting to know the color coding system intimately prior to installing the harness can save a lot of headaches later. Don |

Don, Bentley is wrong. There is only one place in the world you where can find a correct diagram for the '73 and the '76, and that is on the website listed above. Even the owner's manual is wrong. I physically traced the wiring in these models to verify my diagrams. I can only imagine the grief caused over the years by folks relying on incorrect diagrams issued by the factory, and repeated in Bentley and Haynes. At the risk of offending BBS members by advertising, I would also recommend that John get a copy of my electrical handbook for these cars before proceeding with a replacement harness. Dan, If you had not said it, I would have! Most, if not all of us that participate on this BBS appreciate your knowledge and occasional input to keep us on the straight & narrow, if not out of the smoke and fire! Being an owner of the aforementioned book, I endorse it heartily to anyone that has an occasional electrical challenge, unlike myself....being totally challenged! Thanks Dan! ....and Don....get the book, it really is worth it! Rod |

Dan, How interesting. In the 30 plus years that this '75 has graced our garage, it has never experienced an electrical issue aside from normal things like an alternator bearing, blower motor or an ocassional burned out bulb. Seriously, no gremlins of any sort. So I have never had the need to rely upon the Bently diagrams. Well, that was until I just jinxed myself! No wonder we always hear folks complaining about 'english' wiring. If you are relying on a supposedly trusted source for information and that source is tainted, things cannot turn out well. Thanks for giving the old dog a new lesson. Don |
