MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 9' axle available
I'm committed to the 8.8" IRS project, but a friend who's a ford nut found this 9" for me and the price looks good, so if anyone wants it let me know. He says it's 52" drum-to-drum, clean and painted, came out of something like a '64 Falcoln hi-po. 5 lug axles and no 3rd member, the price is $275 which seems fair to me since no narrowing would be needed. Probably have to redrill the lug pattern and the spring perches might have to be moved or might not. Jim jblackwood5@insightbb.com |

Jim the first question I have, is what is the ratio? I live about 30 miles north of Cincinnati. Denny. |

Jim, I have never heard of a mass produced car with a ford rear end and 52" width?? Fill us in on this thing!! Larry |

Denny, it has no 3rd member so the ratio is whatever you put in there. Sounds like you are close enough for a visit. I'm in Florence. Larry, That's really about all I know about it. Apparently it was only used for 2 model years in the high performance falcolns and maybe mustangs. I've got the phone number of the guy who has it if anyone wants it. Should be about the lightest housing they made for a 9", but I have no idea which end bearings it used. Oh, and you guys quit e-mailing me about the 9 foot axle! It was a typo already! ;-P Jim |

Well, I wouldn't have believed that a Falcon ever came with a 9", but apparently so. I found a great quick reference guide (see link below). It seems that the housing in question has been narrowed. http://dfwmotorsport.com/Fairlane/9inchrearends.htm |

I've seen that chart before, but there's enough confusion about these axles that who knows? Certainly not me. Supposedly it is unmodified. Wonder if the factory sold any falcons with extra wide deep dish wheels? Certainly a possibility in an age when special order was no big deal. Tell you what though, if I see him this week I'll ask if he has it at his house. If so I'll take a look at it myself. Jim |

The mystery is solved. Turns out to be 52" flange to flange. So that's 56"+ drum to drum. Jim |

I think (not sure) that a 82-88 2WD S-10 rear is about 53" drum to drum. You'd have to settle for a 7 5/8" ring gear, though. |

So the rear end in an MG is 52" from rotor to rotor or drum to drum? |
