MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Adaptor plate on 3.9 Rover

Gents,

I am building a new motor for the MG. It's a 3.9 liter from a 90' Range Rover. On the back of the crank there is a plate bolted to the crankshaft where automatic drive plate is then bolted. the six hex head cap screws are imposible to get out! I have a 150 psi compressor and an impact gun with no success. Can anyone tell me how they got these bolts out!

Thanks,

Mark.

You might give Mark at D&D a call for tech support...they are very familiar with these blocks...

In fact, they built my B&S 3.9 for me.

You may have to grind the heads off. Once you do that, they will come out by finger. I had the same problem. Since they are hardened, you will probably not be able to drill them out.

Just be sure to use grade 8's when you replace them.
Richard Morris

I used a drill (8 mm from recolection) and drilled into them to the depth of the head. I then used a big extractor and they came out. The theory was that either they would unscrew or the heads would break off. They all unscrewed.
Quick question, when I removed the "thick" plate the one held on with the scrws above) I discovered a thin (like less than 1/8"thick) spacer. Should I reuse it when I fir the flywheel?
Tony Bates

Tony,

The spacer is for the flex plate, don’t use it for the flywheel.

I used a breaker bar with a hex socket. They all came out, no problem. The bolts did look like they had some sort of thread locker on them.
Carl Floyd

Some thread locker materials require to be heated in order to remove fasteners - perhaps this was used here.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I called Mark at D&D and he said they do have thread locker on them. He suggested an impact driver and hit it with a BFH. Tried this to no avail. May try heat next to soften up the thread locker. RR did not want these coming loose!

If I can't get them out I have a realy good 3.5 crank that I will use. It'll bolt right into the 3.9 right?

Thanks

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Had the same problem with the 4.0 I just put in. I've got a great impact gun but it wouldn't move them. But, a breaker bar (2') did the trick. Just find a way to lock the flywheel from turning and lean on it!

A 2-ft bar removed mine too.

The 3.5 and 3.9 cranks are identical and interchangeable but the 3.9 is the only version of the Rover V8 to be externally balanced so you should have the crank, flywheel, pulley, con rods and pistons balanced (regardless of which crank you use).
