MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Air filters

I've been through the archives and can't find any real answers to this question (guess I'm looking for part numbers).

I've got my Rover 3.5 mounted on the stock RB mounts, Edelbrock 500 cfm carb and Performer intake installed and this gives me about 2.5" above the carb flange to the hood. I've installed a scoop as much for clearance as cold-air intake.

The problem I'm running into is a 14" drop-base filter assembly won't clear the forward edge of the scoop. I've checked with all the big name manufacturers and no luck so far.

Options have ranged from shaving the carb mounting off the intake, a custom-built assembly or a plenum and remote cold-air intake. I can't be the only guy who's using this combination of bits and run into this problem.

What are you guys using? Pictures would be great.

Thanks, as always, for the help.

Cheers

I have Holley and Offenhauser manifold, I have built this plenum, I have also built a bulge on an old ally bonnet. With a mallet and patience.

Simon,
My conversion sounds much like yours - stock engine mounts, stock hood & 500cfm Carter AFB. The notable exception is that I run an Olds powerplant with the stock 4bbl intake manifold (which is about the lowest profile intake available).
Mr. Gasket has a couple of 14" drop base air cleaners with varying drop dimensions - sounds like you need to get a new base with a 1" drop. (I believe that mine has a 3/4" drop) - the downside to the 1" drop base is that it will not work with an electric choke - only manual.
I'll see if I can dig up an air cleaner part number and send you a pic of my engine off line.

hrmmm 2" how about directly over the carb?? By that I mean inside the dimensions of the carb. A few of the aftermarket companies make a super small (<6"OD) Air claner now. I see people mount them on dual carb set-ups that then have a carb mounted scoop. That might be your best option.

I was able to buy a Edelbrock 1" drop kit, then I used a 2" K&N filter with an Xtreme Air filter top. Fit under the hood with my 302 motor.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Michel- great looking intake. I may go that route if I can't find something already made up.

Graham- just saw your e-mail. Disregard the questions about what set-up you're using (should have stopped by here first).

Larry- I haven't tried a 6" filter yet but as long as the "net" height of the assembly isn't more than 2.5", I might get away with it. I'll do some checking. I might even be able to fit a 9" or 10" filter if I can find one.

Just an FYI AVOID the SMALL triangular edelbrock filters. The ones that are tiny and dome shape triangles.. thay are knowns for causing fires...
Larry Embrey

Funny you should mention that filter, Larry. When I bought the carb and intake last year, I got that particular filter as well. As luck would have it, it's too tall to fit under the hood. Must have been fate or something....

Is the foam combustible or do they trap vapours? I was using those dome-type filters with the mesh covers on my '74 MGB but have since changed them back to the original assemblies, mainly because I was having trouble with emission readings every year with the foam ones.

This Pipercross filter with recessed base, perhaps a good solution?

Hi Simon,
I'm using an Edelbrock 14" drop base air cleaner (1207)with a Mr.Gasket 2" element. I "modified" for the electric choke on my Carter 400. Rover engine, stock RB motor mounts,Buick 4bl intake. All fit under the bonnet without any problems.

I bought and returned the Pipercross filter as it wouldn't fit under my bonnet. A 14 inch low rider (2 inch high) just fits under but I find it doesn't flow enough air at the high end for the engine (4.6l). I bought one of the X-stream airfilter tops several months ago and will be fitting it shortly. Hopefully I'll see some benefit.

The extream top sits slightly higher than the normal chrome top and that meant that it wouldnt fit under the hood/bonnet by about 8mm. In the end I used an MGC fibreglass hood to get the clearance.
It does make quite a lot of difference to the top end on my 4.0L in a factory shell.

It seems it's a toss-up between the Mr. Gasket and Edelbrock assemblies.

I haven't compared the stats on the two to see if one sits lower than the other yet. A friend of mine passed along some info on how he modified the Mr. Gasket assembly to fit. He was going to try the Extreme K&N but clearance was an issue again.

Anyone know if the K&N will work with any other assembly? IE: if the Mr. Gasket turns out to sit lower than the Edelbrock, would the K&N fit onto this unit to assist with air-flow?

Thanks for the help, guys!

I use an offset 14" round. The hole in the base for the carb is not in the center, it's offset a couple of inches. They are designed for engines with the large HEI distributors, by moving the filter assmbly forward to clear the dist. I just rotated it back, moving the filter assembly back where there's more hood clearance.I believe the brand is Mr. Gasket.

Bill,

Thanks for the info but I tried one of these off-set bases and it still caused problems.

I picked up a Mr. Gasket #4339, low-profile assembly but it's drop is only 3/4". I'm going to try for a bigger drop-base before I modify this one.

On a related note, has anyone tried removing the raised section (air horn?) that holds the flap for the choke? It seems to me that with a low height air filter the flow into the air horn must be very restricted.

David.
