MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Another IRS option?

I saw something today that gave me an idea, not that I plan to do this, but someone might. I was behind this Ford SUV sort of thing called an Escape I think, and I noticed that it's sorta narrow, has an IRS rear suspension, and the odd thing, I could see the pavement where the differential should be. Clearly a FWD with the capacity to be 4wd, it even appeared to have plastic boots covering the inner ends of the stub axles. Perhaps this could be a viable alternative to the scarce and expensive Jag rear? Has anyone else looked at one of these?

Jim,
I think I saw the same with the Honda Civic SUV version. It would not hold up if you would put the power from a 215 V8 behind it. Good idea. I was thinking on using a BMW rear end for IRS but than I saw the Ford Merkur rear end and that might be a better sollution as far as gear ratio's.
Still working on it.

What has happened to Trevor Taylor's business since his death? Are there any of his IRS unit available?

Thanks,

Mick,

That IRS is available via NG or Hawk Cars, Maidstone Motorsport were developing their own but not sure what stage they are at.

Too weak? Maybe, maybe not. Seems it would depend on what center section you fitted to it and the strength of the stub axles. The vehicle looks to be a good bit heavier than an MGB, by say a thousand pounds or so, and chances are the stub axles will hold up. Choice of center section would be determined mainly by how much room there is for it. The really nice thing about IRS is that the differential weight is pretty irrelevant, unlike the solid axle. Although a number of people have swapped out the stock MG axle for stronger heavier units I have yet to hear anybody say they did so because they broke it, so if the diff is as beefy as the stock unit I'd think it'd do OK.

I broke a 3.9 m.g.b diff with a mildly tuned 3.5 Rover
I am now looking to purchase a 8" ford axle from Currie
u.s.a. .Has anyone got more info on this conversion?
