MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Another on the way

Hi all
Bolted my SD1 gearbox onto the back of a range rover 3.5 with p6 flywheel and DAF 400 clutch yesterday. Later this morning I am going to modify the top of the transmission tunnel and then bolt the engine/gearbox in. Wish me luck.....

Well done - tell us about the DAF clutch.

As I recall, you won't have a lot of road to test the brute ?

Nick,
Keep on working and you will have a nice rewaring summer. My car goes like crazy and do gobble petrol with extensive use of the Weber secodary barrels. To bad I canīt drive today. We had some late snowfall yesterday:(

Thanks for the encouraging messages. Finally got the engine and box into position tonight. I still have to sort out the clearance on the top of the gearbox and get new bolts for the gearbox crossmember before it can be bolted in fully. Another few weeks and hopefully it will be driving around for the first time in 14 years!

With regard to the clutch, I got it off ebay. The seller was sure it would fit nothing else other than a v8 daf 400 van, so I was the only bidder and got it for about Ģ30. The same week, secondhand SD1 clutches were going for over Ģ100! I thought that if it didn't fit I would just put it back on ebay, but no need. It fits.... maybe the spring rating is slightly different, but I will not no until I drive it.
Thanks everyone!

I've put the champagne back on ice for a while..... I have been trying to sort out the clearance above the gearbox (LT77) and have made up the new tunnel top as in Roger's v8 conversion book. I put the engine and box in, intending then to cut and weld the top of the tunnel from inside the car. However, with all the bulkheads and panels under the dash it looks really awkward with no space to get a grinder in there. I have even tried an air-chisel and have cut the panel immediately behind the radio completely out, but intending to refit it later. There is still not enough space.... is there an easy way or do I have to heave out the engine and box and go in from underneath? (I think I already know the answer!)
Thanks as ever.
Nick Bentley

Nick,
Anything is possible, but far from practical. I guess you have noticed that the V8 is by far easier to put in and take out compared with the fourbanger. Be prepared to lift the engine atleast a couple of times, making sure that everything fits properly.
I cut my gearbox tunnel from underneath with a tiger saw. The welding was done both from below and above. Take care not cutting or burning any electrical or heater operating cables. It pays to lend in a mate keeping good lookout.
