MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Backplates MGB and MGC

I was going to post this on MG Interchangebale Parts but the last post there was on 24 Feb! I thought it would have more chance of being answered here.

Are the rear wheel backplates identical and interchangeable on the late MGB and MGC steel wheel axles?

No.

Liam,

they are interchangeable I 'm guessing you want to put B plates on a C diff. The C brakes are all different and hard or worse to get

You can definitely use your MGB brakes, backig plate and MGB hub on a MGC axle, direct bolt on, no mods.

The backing plates are not identical.

Liam,

if you have stripped every part of the brakes from both axles, start reassambly by fitting the MG B Backplates with the four bolts, fix the MG B GT callipers (!> GT item is not the same as that used on Roadsers<!), hand break mechaniesm, shoues with liners, sprigs and flange with nut and split pin. Drop the MG B drum over your installation and fit a MGB wire wheel handbrake cable to your installation. Maybe you will have to reposition the front boss of the Handbrake cable in the tunnel a little, depending upon the cable you have got from your source.
BTW, your axle will not work with the cable for disc wheels, as your axle is a bit narrower than that it replaces!

Don't worry, it is am easy bolt on job. The Sailsbury axle castings are identical on B's and C's.
If the flange of your MG C axle has become solid on the halfshaft, a small gas tourch and a lightly preloaded puller will help a lot. This was the only problem when I did this conversion but this way it worked fine.

One other thing to remember is that the C driveshaft flange isn't the same as a B, but they also interchange.
Jake Voelckers

But you might as well keep the larger C drive flange as you’ll need a new propshaft anyway.

I had just wanted to clean and paint the C backplates for re-use if possible rather than have two axles to trip me up in the garage!

I managed to swap the thrust washers yesterday, nice job, I'm pleased with the results.

But - at the end I gave one of the half shafts a whack with the hammer and it seemed to push the half shaft in a few mm i.e. down through the bearing. It was resting up against the pinion in the diff so I levered it back up a few mm re-engaging with the bearing and lifting it back out of its seat a touch.

Will this all align itself when I finally fit and tighten the hubs etc. Or if the bearing isn't pushed fully home on the shaft i.e. is out of its seat by a couple of mm will it cause any issues?
