MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Belt Driven Water Pumps

which water pump is everyone using ie. buick 215 w/o AC, or w/ AC, or buick 300, or early rover, or buick v6? mine is from a non AC F-85 and as i stated in an earlier thread, had an interference problem with the alternator cradle. anyways, not being one to measure twice and cut once, i hacked 1.5" of the end of it and it fits fine, but saw a few other pumps online for later buick (300) engines that look to fit right but have the water outlet angled more downward. is this what i need to get to use the lower V8 radiator hose, or will it reach up to mine just fine? im planning on using a modified late B radiator. can anyone help?
jake

I’m using a Buick V6 water pump which is shorter than the Buick V8 water pump. When installing a new lower radiator hose it’s important to rotate the hose on the pump to insure the alternator belt doesn’t rub on it.
George Champion

george,
in which direction is it shorter, away from the radiator, or the water outlet?
jake

The Buick V6 water pump is shorter in the direction of the water pump than the Buick V8 water pump. When I exchanged my V8 pump for a V6 water pump and they were sitting side-by-side on the counter they looked the same other than that. There may be various applications that tilt the water inlet some, but I have no idea what they would be.

I'm using a Buick 300 pump so that I can run the alternator on the right side of the engine.

Carl-

What does a Buick 300 pump look like compared to a V6 or 215 pump? Your message implies the discharge outlet it not where it is for the 215.

By right hand side do you mean forward looking aft (driver's) or aft looking forward (passenger)?

Like Jake, I'm trying to decide which side to mount the alternator and I'm trying to squeeze in an engine driven fan. I'd like to know what opions a 300 pump would give me.

Thanks, Phil

Phil,
I'm using a buick 3.8L V6 timing cover, a buick 300 water pump, buick 300 alternator cradle (modified to move the alt about 1/4" closer to the motor) and I have a perma-cool ultra high efficiency 13" flex fan on the front of the motor. There is no interference between the 300 pump water outlet and the 300 alternator cradle which is on the passenger side of the car. No interference between the fan belt and the water pump hose either. I really need to put cowling around that fan, but I think I'm gonna procrastinate that for a while. I'm not having any cooling problems right now, and I still have 10 fingers.

gents,
i have pictures of each pump, buick 215, 300, and v6. i set up a page to view each side by side. the address is

I am also using a Buick 300 Water pump with a passenger side mounted alternator. No problems with the belt rubbing. I am using a bracket from D&D modified to allow the stock factory V8 lower hose to clear and attach to a factory V8 radiator. I am using a D&D supplied 15 inch fan but may change to the Triumph style fan that Carl Floyd and others use.
Jake, Thanks for posting the pictures of the water pumps. Is the V6 pump the same nose length as the V8 pump??
James Johanski

Be advised that there are two lengths of V6 pumps. The early(64-74 225cid) at 3 1/4 inch length and late(75 up) at 4 1/2 inches. The Jeep V6 water pump was the early version. One problem with using the shorter version is finding a crank pulley that will line up, but getting back 1 1/4 inches of engine length could help, especially for those wanting to fit a large electric puller fan.

Phil,

Sorry for the slow response. Went to South Carolina this weekend to spend the night aboard the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier with my Cub Scout Pack. What a treat!

To reduce confusion, right or left side of a vehicle is as if sitting in the driver seat.

The 300 pump outlet is angled down enough to go just under a right-side mounted atlernator. It is also shorter than the 215 pump (3/4"?).

This pic doesn't show the water pump, but you can see where the alt. is positioned (scroll to bottom):

I had orignally wanted to reserve the driver-side space for an A/C compressor. Maybe I should locate a supercharger there instead. :)
