MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Borg Warner T5 5-spd transmission
Hello all. I have question regarding the Borg Warner T5 5-spd tranny that is commonly used in the V8 conversions in the USA. I just got the book "How to give your MGB V8 power" and it recommends the Borg Warner T5 5-spd tranny, model #1352-212 or #1352-213 (which is the 0.73:1 or 0.63:1 fifth gear). Does anyone know what the fifth gear is on a Borg Warner T5 5-spd tranny model # 1352-181? If is not 0.73:1 or 0.63:1 can it affordably be made to work in the V8 conversion or affordably change the gears to make it work? |

eric, that ID number shows that the transmission is from an 87 F body car ie camaro, firebird and that its from behind a v6 engine. if this is consistant, the input shaft should be either 10 or 14 spline whereas the v8 transmissions from 83-92 had a 26 spline input shaft. 5th gear from an 87 v6 car is .76 this info was taken from http://www.5speeds.com and http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/calculations.shtml |

Jake, thank you for the information. I already knew it originally came from a mid 80's F-body, a Camaro to bew exact. But I was unaware of the difference in splines and was not sure if it came from a V6 or a V8 Camaro. Again, thank you, this information is very helpful. |

Jake, sorry forgot to ask, can this particular model be reconfigured affordably (as opposed to being costly and should I keep looking) to be workable for a V8 conversion? |

eric, for all intents and purposes, the best thing to do would be to get a v8 transmission. you could i guess get the internals from a v8 tranny and swap them into the v6 case, but they would have to be non world class parts, as the NWC gearboxes cannot be made into WC 'boxes. one place to look for a good v8 transmission is on eBay, i got mine on there for $310 and another $40 shipping, but i have seen them go as high as $600, its all about the right one at the right time. by using those two sites posted above, you should be able to figure out which ID numbers to look for, and go from there. good luck with the conversion, email if you need any more help. |

Another good place to look would be http://www.car-part.com That's a cool website, I spend a lot of time there. :) Good luck with your conversion! Justin |
