Notice I stuttered on "money" Yeah, I'm a tightwad.

Dan, we have not finalized all costs, but I CAN guarantee that this will be:

"The Driving Experience of 2005!"

YEEHAAAWWW!!! :)
Carl Floyd

I'm a tightwad, but I'll be there, whatever the cost.

To quote Carl: YEEHAAAWWW!!!

You guys have raised the bar. Now I'm going to have to really get to work on making the 2006 event as good.

re: You guys have raised the bar. Now I'm going to have to really get to work on making the 2006 event as good.

Dan...Each of these meets have their own "flavour". We just need to provide an atmosphere with some activities that the participants will enjoy! Not all participants want to do an autocross every year (except for one from Tennessee!); nor do they have a desire to run a road course. But, we need to attempt to provide a "menu" of activities that will "quench the thirst" of a majority of registrants! You provided an excellent venue in 2003 in Townsend!

To me, the Tail of the Dragon makes it all worth the drive to Townsend! The fact that MG 2006 (the next All-Register meet) will be in Gatlinburg at about the same time as British V8 2006 (perhaps the weekend before or the weekend after?????)will make that drive even more worthwhile! ...I'll have numerous opportunities to "Slay the Dragon!"!!!

Each V8 event that I've attended has been enjoyable and worth the effort to get there.

I hope that other enthusiasts have the same outlook!

Regards..

Rick - AMEN!

Its all about friendships and driving our cars, I've never had a bad time at any MG event

Can't wait!! Steve

Why are the yearly event always so far away:

MapQuest says:
Total Est. Time: 12 hours, 42 minutes Total Est. Distance: 825.79 miles

Guess I better move, leave early or drive fast!
Michael S. Domanowski

Regarding driving distance:

There has been at least one V8 meet on the East Coast (1998, I believe, near Baltimore?) The V8 meet in 2001 was in Sebring, Florida. We've been to Grand Rapids twice, Champaign IL once, Cleveland once, St.Louis once, Townsend Tennessee once and next year in Terre Haute IN. (Thats about the limits on my memory, sorry.)

There have also been some gatherings on the West Coast, knowing that the Rockies do provide a bit of a barrier.

All it takes to get an event closer to where you live is to off to coordinate an event. It helps to have a population of V8s in that region (or to have the region be such a draw that it would be almost mandatory to attend).

Some of us travel great distances...I've driven to the West Coast i an MG twice, and will have a third trip coming up to Washington State this July. I view 12 hours as a one day excursion, personally.

I would welcome an opportunity to visit New England, the Carolinas, etc.

Someone willing to step up to the plate and offer to host?

rick

Rick,

The V8 2006 meet will be the weekend before the MG 2006 All-Register meet, at the same location as before. Talk about a bargain. Two great events in the same week! Look out Dragon! I only got a few votes, and they were equally split between May and June. The two events will be completely seperate - just pack up the car in Townsend after the V8 meet and drive to Gatlinburg for the MG 2006 meet.

Michael,

All it takes to have a meet near you is for you to step up and volunteer to host it. New York would be a good location for a change. 2008?

Kurt Schley and Sue Hunter have volunteered to host it in Cleveland in 2007. We still need hosts for the V8 West meets for 2005, 2006, and 2007. Any takers?

To the "one from Tennessee" - we will have an autocross in 2006!

Wimp! My record is 18.5 hours nonstop from Wisconsin in 1998. I could do more when I was younger, but at 64, I seem to be slowing down a bit. My record when I was a lad is 84 hours nonstop, but that was as a hitchiker, so I got to doze a bit on the way. Many of those hours were spent alongside the road with my thumb out. (You haven't lived until you've stood alongside the road at 2:00AM in December in Tucumcari, New Mexico)

OK, Dan....the challenge is on! The Abingdon Endurance Challenge is October 9-10 and is based out of Columbus, IN....about 1000 miles in about 24 hours.

Next year, you can join me for the Missouri Endurance Challenge in March (again, about 1000 miles in about 24 hours), and the Grand Lake Tour (you guessed it...about 1000 miles in about 24 hours).

All of these Enduros are made available to any British car made 1980 or before. They're a lot of fun...and do challenge both man and machine.

My first trip out to Lake Tahoe was in the MGB for MG '95 with my wife (Jean), Robin Weatherall, and Mike Satur. My first day was about 19 hours of steady driving. We met up with Ian Pender in Salt lake City on the second day of driving before overnightin in Reno (and Weatherall's infamous visit to a Ranch of Mustangs). It was only about a 45 minute drive from Reno to the Cal-Neva in north Lake Tahoe if I remember correctly.

Wanna relive some "saddle-sores"??? I'm sure we can find you a co-driver/navigator!

So was Robin looking for a 302 for his MGB at this 'Ranch O' Mustangs'? Or maybe something else?

MG content: absolutely none

Greg...

Rob was looking for a type of "tang"....methinks it was most likely of the "poon" variety.

Rick,

I may just take you up on your challenge, as soon as I have a running British car again.

I do hereby retract the "wimp" label! You are now officially my hero! And role model!
Dan Masters

Guys, I wasn't complaining just stating the facts.

I rode my bike non stop to Miami Florida from NY, 1485 miles in just under 24 hours, but I was much younger then. That is averaging over 61 mph with gas
stops every 200 miles.

12 hours in the MGB V8 isn't such a bad deal and it is a one day event, I did it last year to Townsend and my V8 was sick, couldn't push it much past 120 mph. I have 3.00:1 gear ratio so I'm just turning over about 2400 rpm in 5th at 80 mph, very relaxed crusing. I just don't like driving for 12 hours straight on the interstates.

My vote is for June in 2006 in Townsend.
Michael S. Domanowski

Knowing that there are going to be all those really neat things to do next June is going to make intervening time seem SOOOOOOOOOOOOO long! I checked out the Putnam Park website and the racetrack rules. None of the rules seemed to forbid putting long, circular skid marks in the grass, so I will be able to run the track employing my usual lack of driving skills. Thank you, Pete and Dave in advance for all the work you have already put into the event!!!!!!
Kurt Schley

Kurt..

You're welcome.

re: My record is 18.5 hours nonstop from Wisconsin in 1998.

Dan, I forgot about my solo trip to Sebring, Florida in the MGC for British V8 2001. I left Champaign at 0600 CST with plans of driving until dark, knowing that I would probably make it to at least the Florida/Georgia border. When I got to the border, it was still light, so I kept driving, thinking that it couldn't be that much further to Sebring. (Oops.)

I got to Sebring about 0200 EST, then proceeded to get lost IN SEBRING looking for the hotel! I finally found it about 45 minutes later and bunked down for the night.

I was awakened by the sound of engines about 0800 that morning, and in looking out the window, discovered that the hotel was located on the hairpin turn of the track and a vintage race was going on at the time! (The V8 meet was sandwiched in between a weekend of vintage races and the annual Sebring 12 hour weekend.)

That was a GREAT event....I got four hot laps on the track; I saw Bob Tulius' collection of vintage aircraft and Group 44 cars (as well as other cars located in the hangar); I spent about an hour one-on-one at the bar talking WWII warbirds with Mr.Tulius (he was the keynote speaker for our event, but REALLY loved to talk about warbirds, and knew a friend of mine (Rudy Frasca) from here in Champaign who also has a great collection of the same). (Rudy has an airworthy Spitfire MK XVIII, a "project" Spitfire, a replica Zero, a P-40, a T-6 trainer, and is currently building a 1:1 replica of a FW-190....in addition to the numerous other aircraft, vintage and modern, that he has sitting in the hangars.)

I always find the road trip to be as great of an adventure as the meet itself....hence I don't worry too much about the distance from home. (Now then, I'm not saying that I don't like having something in my own backyard, though!)

FWIW...
