MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - B.W. T-5=O.K. B.W. T-10=?

I have seen many mustang fanatics go from the standard 3 speed or the lame automatic (I apologise for those of you who do use it) system to the Borg-Warner T-10 four speeds. Since A vast majority of people prefer to use the T-5 tranny. to go with the 289/302, does anyone know if the T-10 was used in place of the T-5 for increased performance or any other means?

Also, If it isn't too much trouble, could anyone go step by step explaining to me how one would remove and replace the standard transmission and rear drive axle with the Borg-Warner T-5 (Even better if you can the T-10) and an appropriate rear drive axle that can withstand the serious torque and power of the 289/302?
L. Kelly

AFIK the Warner T-10 was first used on 1957 Corvettes. It was strong and fast shifting compared to the later Muncie and Saginaw boxes used by GM. It was available in cast iron and in aluminum. The later T5's are plenty strong enough for any SBF engine and have the advantage of an overdrive fifth gear and are more available. Are you building a Mustang? or an MG?

An 8 inch Ford rear end from a six cylinder Maverick or Comet has the same bolt pattern (pcd) as the MGB, and can be narrowed and have mounts fabricated for spring pads, or not narrowed and wheels made with offsets to compensate, as I did.

An M.G. of course. I ask this because people choose to go to a T-10 over a T-5 when they change transmissions in either their Mustang's or Cougars.
If they do it for a good reason, then what is that reason and why can't I do it with a 302 in an M.G.?
L. Kelly

I guess youd'd better ask the Mustang and Cougar people why they do what they do. They may not wish to change their final drive ratios when changing transmissions and since they drag race only, they have no need for a cruising gear.

When I found a '63 Buick bellhousing for my 215, it came with an iron case T10.
I upgraded to a T5 mainly because the T5 has an integral shifter mechanism.
The T10 would be extremely difficult to package in an MG, since the shifter runs
along the exterior, driver's-side of the case. As I recall, it weighed about ten tons
too.

Kelly, news to me. Must people change to T5 or upgrade wuth a Tremec. going from a T5 to T10 would be consider a downgrade.

The only reason would be for drag racing, becouse of gear ratios, but then be careful T10's also came with different ratios for different applications. I would rather go with the Tremec and choose the ratios for my application. Or The T5 World Class also has a choice of ratios from Ford and you could taylor it to your needs.
A real reason why would anyone would do such a exchange is beyon my understanding. Unless is Budget reasons.

Bill, here is what I found. I was cruising F- Body (Z28 & Firebird) websites for T-5 info and all I saw was whining and complaining about how crappy the T-5's where, especially the pre world class ones. Even the World class ones everyone was recommending to junk em, the problem was that they cannot handle huge amounts of torque. Anything over like 350lbs tends to fry them, now with a buick 215 that is not an issue, but those big heavy cars combined with big block V8's is a problem.

However, in the Mustang arena, eveyone seems to like em, and I do not see much negative sentiment, that leads me to believe that it is not just a torque iisue but a torque/car weight issue.. Obviously our MG's will not have those problems.

Kelley,
good thing about Ford t-5 is shifter is in a better location for conversions (20" from b/h mounting surface) and not at an angle. I found that the shifter from a 300ZX turbo has the same mounting as the Ford, and gives a much shorter throw with better feel. Give it a try, much cheaper than the aftermarket short throw shifters.
Curtis

Curtis,
So this 300Z shifter fits right on in place of the Std Mustang? Wow, I will have to start looking for one of those also then!

I started to read this thread for the first time tonight. I am very interested to read many of the comments and suggestions in design of the rear end for an MG with V8 power. I have attached a URL for my project not so much to sell it but to get comments on my solution. I put a narrowed Ford 5.0 HP package in the MGA MKII. The four bar suspension was copied from hot rod/race car designs and all fabricated by hand. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
