MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - CALIPER CLEARENCE

HAVE GONE DOWN THE SDI (TWINLINE) 4 POT CALIPER PLUS PEUGOT 505 VENTED DISC ROUTE. GOT EVERYTHING TOGETHER TO FIND THAT THE CALIPER NOW PROTUDES BEYOND THE WHEEL MOUNTING FACE OF THE HUB ABOUT 0.600".SPOKE TO ROGER AT THE SHOW ABOUT THIS AND TOOK HIS ADICE TO MAKE SURE THE CALIPER WAS CENTERED ON THE DISC AND IF NECESSARY ALTER THE CALIPER CENTER SPACER TO ACHIEVE THIS. AS IT WAS ITS DEAD CENTER ANYWAY. I COULD BRING THE DISC AND CALIPER 0.200" NEARER THE UPRIGHT BUT STILL LEAVES ME WITH A PROBLEM. APPEARS ON A PHOTO OF JOHN BOURKES SET UP THAT HE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. JUST NEED TO KNOW IF I CAN GET ALLOYS TO CLEAR THE CALIPER.YOUR COMMENTS APPREACHIATED. REGARDS ADRIAN

I'm running the SD1 type calipers and ford escort cosworth turbo 4x4 discs, 6x14 alloys as sold by mgbhive will fit without a spacer. 6x15 superlite alloys need a spacer on the hub face. NOTE this is with an extended rear bearing spacer/oilseal bearing that was needed on my previous setup.

Hope this helps, I'll try to get some photos sorted and post them soon.

Dave thanks for your prompt reply. question, whats the extended rear bearing for? does this move the hub away from the upright. regards adrian

Adrian,

The previous setup I used had 247mm capri vented discs and girling/ate type 16 calipers. To get wheel clearance with a flat backed wheel, ie hub face further out than the caliper, the whole hub was spaced further out from the upright by about 3 or 4 mm with a thicker oil seal ring.

When I changed to the 4 pot SD1 calipers and a 278mm disc the oil seal rings where left in place - the hub retaining nut is still lockable with a split pin.

If I remember correctly Roger Parker has a set of centre lock alloys on his roadster that look very like minilites or possibly the minator equivalent. These would have the hub mating face about 20mm in from the back of the spokes if they like my bolt on versions - comments Roger?

I'll try to get a digital camera this evening and take some shots so you can see how its all gone together.

Can you do my gearbox swap by digital camera too?

Adrian,

As you can see from the photos on the V8 site I have added a 3mm alloy spacer plate.I didn't want to do this but it made a big difference to :

a)Clearance to both the front and the pad aperture side of the caliper as the inside of the wheel is tapered.I think that you should aim for around 3mm clearance.

b)Clearance to the track rod end and boot-again as the inside of the wheel is tapered.

I'm using 6 x14 GB alloys-these are now impossible to get new as they have discontinued the MGB size(they still seem to do them for minis)I reckon that they were some of the best alloys generally availible for the B in the 80's as they have sculptured curved spokes to the rear face which gives the very best clearance to the calipers.(Always look at the REAR of an alloy wheel to get an idea of it's quality).I think you will find that Roger is using GB alloys which have been machined to take centre locking adaptors(judging from the photo's).
If you are buying wheels from scratch and have plenty of wedge speak to minilite perhaps(but I have seen reports of poor service).I personally am impressed by the Compomotive ML wheels-heat treated, curved spokes etc.I would get them in 6x15 whch will ease clearance considerably and might mean no shims-I still think that you might need them to clear the front face....

One point that a lot of people never mention is that the engaged length of the studs can get a bit short with some alloys especially with a spacer-you should aim for a minimum of 5 complete turns with a steel nut-ideally an effective 1.5 times the core diameter.
The trick to get around this is to remove the old studs and use REAR hub studs which are longer and have a nice grip length (which would normally engage the brake drum)Any way, since you work for (SPS?) I'm probably telling a granny how to suck eggs here......
For guys in the US I believe that some of the Ford Mustang Hardware fits here but I'm not sure...

As usual John covers the issue well.

Yes my wheels do have the described format and whilst the manufactuer of the wheels is unclear I suspect them to be of newer manufacture than Minilite. The wheels were obtained already in the current form and from looking at the visual aspects of the centre bolts it is clear that this is a one off type of conversion rather than a production item. (Bolts are not pretty to look at and they would be if it were a production item)
