MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - car insurance, need some advice

It occurred to me a week or so ago, (after drag racing against Glen Towery in his V8 BGT), that I probably needed to get full coverage. Currently I just have liability.

I have Farmers and I like my agent. He said I need to get an appraisal of my MGB LE V8 before I can get it. He told me to look in the yellow pages here in tulsa and get it appraised. I was wanting it insured for $17,000.00. Which, with me paying $8,000 for the car and then $9,000 on all the various parts I have bought for the Rover engine, this would be an appropriate value.

I called the local appraiser (only one in the yellow pages). I told him I had a pristine 1980 MGBLE with the Rover v8 and 5 speed in it. Basically it is close to show quality car. The guy quickly laughed at me and said he has never seen an MGB woth $17,000. He said he couldn't help me.

I even pointed out that I am willing to pay a stated value policy as well as drive the car 3000 miles or less a year.

So far, the agent is checking on what we can do minus the appraiser.

You guys are probably up on what I need to get insurance wise.

Can someone please help?

You must be able to get Classic car insurance on your side of the pond - even if the agents need to approach underwriters over here. These people should know who else is in the business even if they can't help themselves http://www.kanetix.com/car-classic-insurance.html.

Agreed upon value is available.

My wife's 78 MGB V8 is insured for $28,000.00 (but we have got way more than that in her).

I ended up with Hagerty.

I got $17,000 coverage with $0.00 deductible and 10 mile towing for the reasonable amount of $320.00 per year.

It's a detailed application form and they want pictures of everything. But it was painless and everyone says good things about Hagerty.

The only thing that they require is you limit the mileage per year to 3000 or so. I put 4000 in the estimated yearly (this year has been 800). They said in a phone call that that is more than they usually will accept. But I still got the policy.

All in all, I think it was reasonable and a lot less frustrating than having to deal with Farmers.

DID YOU BEAT HIM?????

Yes, but you need to hear his side of it. He said he had another gear to go (I am sure we we at or over 100mph). The thing is that I still have the 3.9 and Glen is running the MGC 3.07. We both would have gone off a bridge and my wife was about to scream. Also, Glen was 1800 miles from home, I was 2 miles. But yeah, I took him, no doubt. It was one of those moments you would give anything for a video of it. Just imagine what everyone else saw, two old Enlish sports cars going like bats out of hell.... WONDERFUL.

Okay Glen, tell your side...

Yeah you beat me. 74 1/2 mgbgt (my first v8 conversion),463,000 miles 200,000 last rebuild, car loaded with parts plus roof top carrier full of parts, and i also had the old lady in there with me. i'm not going to say how much she weighs. and you only beat me by 6 inches. Richard thinks my fuel injection is a handicap. I think the old goat did pretty good for the life she's had to live with me.

I just put some pictures of Glens car and mine on my Clock Repair web site.

I see that Glen replied, but it was using my name. Wonder how he did that...

And I bet my old lady weighs more than his. And mine was with me too. (Boy, this is getting risky)

I thought he did pretty well, especially since his is a GT and SO MUCH heavier. ...I can't stop laughing...
