MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Ceramic coatings

I’m going to get my RV8 exhaust manifolds ceramic coated. Any recommendations on quality companies in North America, or one’s to stay away from?

Thanks, Kelly

Kelly,

I had my headers coated recently by a company called "Redi-Strip" near Vancouver, BC. Not the closest place to you but just wanted to pass on cost and quality.

About $170 CDN and the work is first class. Not at the stage of putting them in yet so can't comment on how cool they'll run but the tech did say the coating should make a big difference.

Cheers

I would suggest Swain Technologies. They did mine and they are holding up very well after 6 years.I recently had them coat some piston domes and build up the skirt diameters with another process and the work is very good.If ever you see a magazine article about these processes it is usually this company that is featured. They are in Scottsville NY,phone is 585-889-2786.

I had my RV8 headers done by JetHot. rick

I just got a quote from Jet Hot for $279 for a pair of V8 headers from TSI. I have used Jet Hot on previous cars with great success, but this seems expensive.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone used Performance coatings? Their prices look good and the coatings they offer are for the most part a 2000deg coating compared to JetHots 1300.

Dale, I'll check with Swain. If I have to ship, it doesn't really matter where I guess.

Thanks, Kelly

Performance coatings looks like they use Techline's materials.

They have a applicator list on the site.

I've used techlines dry film lubes and ceramic coats for DIY applications

Thanks Michael,

That lead me to a applicator close to home. It looks like the price is good too. About $140.

And, I'm headed that way in a week.

Hi Kelly,
That seems like a great deal, would you care to share the details so that I can contact them as well.
Thanks

I have used two companies in my area. The best of which is www.finishlinecoatings.com .They have the best rates I have found and are used by most of the show cars and race cars in the area. They do a vast amount of UPS work as well. They are one of the only companies I have found who offer a bright chrome look in their finish as well as other colors.
I am sure there are many others that do the same work but they are good people and do superior work.

$250 is the norm for coating that I have seen. $140 seems quite low, see if you can view some old customers cars and that it is inside and outside coating..

Larry Embrey

Here's one in Texas that lists a price of $100 a pair, inside and outside.

There are a lot of links off of the web site that Michael listed.

Since all of these are using the same product, the quality is the question.

I talked to techline about putting the ceramic coating on the inside of the pipes. They said since it needed to be perfectly clean, etched metal (sandblasted) that there was no good way to put the coating on the inside, and that it would probably just flake off in most applications

I know from personal experience that it doesn't stick well to smooth metal that has been cleaned with laquer thinner. It needs to be roughed up some.

I talked to an engineer at Swain who told me that claims of coating the inside of headers is a marketing ploy only,it won't stay on,makes sense to me.It's been my experience that some companies have better marketing dept's than engineering dept's(e.g. Total Seal rings).

I had my RV8 headers coated inside and out by HPC in Phoenix. Cost was $180 total for headers and collector pipes. HPC (High Performance Coatings) has offices elswhere in the US and I think Australia.

I think the RV8 manifolds could be blasted inside too.
They are short. Since mine are new and have not been on the car yet, they have the best shot at holding the coating. I like the idea of the black 2000 deg coating for max protection. The black would match my alloy MG valve covers too. I'll let you know how they turn out.
