MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Clive wheatley steady bar

Hi
I have finished my conversion but still have a Clive Wheatley steady bar in my box of bits.I thought i was a bit of an engineer but i cannot work out how to fit it, does any body know? and preferably have some pictures of one fitted?

Thanks
Graham

Might be across the back of the engine, head to top of footwell; or possibly it bolts to the front of the LHS head

Graham,
It should fit on the right hand cylinder head (from the front) in the position where the engine lift bracket bolts on. Then line up the bar to the inner wing, if your lucky it will just miss the overflow tank if you have it in the standard position, you need to drill a hole through the inner wing just below the outer wing lip and then just bolt it in.

Don't have a current picture with the bar fitted, but it makes an enormous difference to engine stability and will save your engine mounts from tearing apart.

Thanks Kevin

Could really do with a picture though, the overflow tank has moved to the other side of the car, but have the oil filter in that area, don't know how this would affect the fitment.

Graham,

I just happen to have installed it last night. I bought it months ago but did not have the opportunity to do it until now. I was just as confused, so I spoke to Clive. It mounts to the right-side (viewed from the front) front of the cylinder head. The bar extends from the mounted bracket to the upper inner wing on the same side. It is a fairly tight fit, so you must attach the bar loosely to the bracket before inserting the other end into the hole you drill on the inner wing. The bar runs just to the right of the overflow tank, viewed from above and to the outside of the wing. The spacer that Clive provides mounts on the tire side of the inner wing.

It looks great. Mine is a factory car, but it should be the same for a conversion.

Let me know if any of this is ambiguous.

Doesn't it make the inner wing flex when the loading is applied? Or is the wing stiff enough in this area? I can't see Clive selling something that isn't properly sorted.

Mike,

The wing does seem stiff enough. This is the narror area at the top of the inner wing, just above the bend. That may add to the tensile strength.

Thanks Tom
The spacer that you speak of seems to be a funny shape? or does that make it fit correctly?

I have enough info now with the pictures and descriptions, so here goes.

Thanks

P.S.

I have moved my overflow and coil to that side so lets hope i have the room.

Hello Graham,

The spacer in question has a trapezoidal shape. I positioned it so that the more narrow end is towards the front of the car. This seems to follow the dimensions of the panel it overlays.

Hi Graham

I hope you have managed to gett this to fit OK. I was thinking about putting something similar on my K series powered B and would live to have a look once you have fited it and get some advice if you don't mind?

Ed Braclik

have seen one guy mount the steady bar using the gearbox-to-engine mountings rather than the cylinder heads. Seems more sensible to me as it reduces the stress put on the heads; extra stress via a steady bar isn't what you really want now is it.

I will send some pictures when it is done, i have been off the road for a couple of weeks with a bad back.
