MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Coil Springs
What kind / rating front coil springs are the guys with MGB/302's using? Reading various articles suggest rubber bumper MGB/GT springs might work well.(?) This is for an MGA/302. For the first time go-around I am just going to use the MGB suspension. Something fancier has to wait until after retirement. |

The factory V8s used the 72-on CB GT springs BHH 1077. FWIW the rears were 550lb BHH1133 on CB V8s and BHH1171 on RB. These are 'heavier' than the springs for any other MGB. |

Kurt, My 1976/302 conversion has the Moss 1" lowering springs (rated at 480#). Considering the overall weight over the front axle has been reduced (RB removal, aluminum hood, etc) vs the additional (+15lbs) over std MGB engine/xsmn, I have not considered a rating change for the front springs. On a separate note, hope your health improves and all of us will miss you and Sue in Wisc. |

Hi Kurt The Moss springs (1'-480 lb) with a 13/16 front bar is a good combination for the road For more sporty driving 530-550 lb is great but no more than a 3/4 front bar is needed. Hope this helps Gary |

Hi Kurt, I bought an engine from you back 6 or 7 years ago for my Buick 215/MGA. Well, don't use BGT springs wether chrome or rubber bumper. The A's front is too light when compared to a B. I know the Buick is about 50lbs less than the 302 but my B suspension setup w/ chrome GT springs set my MGA's front end 1.5" TOO high, over stock. I went with MGB lowering springs and actually is closer to -1.0" below stock, personal taste. I'll bet your stock MGA springs and the 302 will sit nearly in the stock position. I did use a 5/8" chrome bumper GT's sway bar, Saab minilites, and a 0.63OD T5. Glad to hear you are finally getting on with the A. |

Kurt I used 550 lb springs that are available from Summit or Jegs you can get different lengths and requires very little modification to fit in. Mine at=re a wee bit taller tha needed but does give front end clearance--someday I may trim them a bit. Dale Spooner is the one who steered me this way.Hope youre feeling better. |

Hi I have heard one way to lower the car is to heat up the springs or cut them. I would be more interested in cutting and was wondering if there is some rule of thumb. Like cutting of 1/2" to lower 1" type of thing. Any one have any ideas about this. Thanks Bruce |
