MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Cruise control?

I'd like to install a cruise control in my V8. The 4-banger BBS seems to suggest that the Audiovox unit that can be obtained from JC Whitney is pretty good. Is there an easy way to rig one of these up in a V8? Do you need the auxiliary vacuum canister? ... driveshaft magnets?
Ted

Hi Ted, I've installed a cruise control in my V8 roadster. The brand I used was Command AP 50, made here in Australia. It does use a vacuum control & a magnet on the drive shaft. It was quite straight foreward to instal. It took about half a day, but I could do one in a couple of hours now. My car is an automatic, but I think it would work on a manual because of lack of gear changing required with a V8.HTHs Barrie E

Ted:
I put an Audiovox in another vehicle a couple of years ago. Nice kit. You might need to source a vacuum can since none came in the kit. You should be able to find one in a junk yard pretty cheap though. Memories a little fuzzy, but I think the pickup worked off of the coil for speed control. Magnets/pickup were an option though.
BTW - we got it at PEP BOYS cheaper than Whitney had it and didn't have to wait for it either.

Ted: I got the Audiovox unit from JCW a while back...changed jobs, moved to USA, still haven't found the box it was packed in, so can't comment on operational aspects. It looks like a decent kit, and has been praised by another contributor here. Despite JCW's catalog comments you do NOT need the extra cost driveline magnet kit - there's one in the Audiovox box, and it looks superior to the one JCW charge $14 for! Also strongly doubt you'd need the vac can with your V8 unless you have installed a radical camshaft. Got the unit for $69 in one of JCW's frequent "sales".

I prefer the driveline magnet kit rather than signalling the cruise "brain" from the ign. coil for a couple of reasons: first, you can change your ignition to high powered or multi-spark systems without buggering the cruise, and second, with my OD-equipped 4-cyl, drop out of OD into 4th for steep hills without losing 18% of road speed.

Barrie, where do you get one of these systems and how much are they?
Matt

Matt, K Mart, normally about au $178, but K Mart do have good sales occasionally. The kits are complete, theres nothing extra to buy & there is after sales back-up if needed.Barrie E
