Front of the engine?

Sorry, too good to pass up.

If you have a GM dizzy, orient it so the vacuum advance has room to move when adjusting timing & the window is accessable (just barely) to adjust dwell.
Looking straight down at the distributer, the vac advance will point to 7:30, + -.

If this is not what you are asking, explain further.

sorry, i guess i blanked when i wrote that. im actually looking for the coil location. thanks for the info on the distributor orientation though.

The factory cars have the coil on the backside of the LH radiator mount, pointing down about 55 degrees from the horiz. from memory.

I always wondered why MG often mounted their coils upside down (with the connections at the bottom) - is it to promote oil leakage out of the coil, past the O-ring seal in the HT lead tower?

In the process of reassembling my Factory V-8 after restoration, I noticed some oil on the LH frame rail, just behind the radiator. This was even before I had started the engine! Found out it was coming from the brand new Lucas coil. The second one has been fine.

Cheers,

It's so that, even if the rack, engine, gearbox and rear axle don't leak there is another chance of your car marking its territory, Paul.

I wondered about that too. Mine is the only car [a LHD ~replica of a factory v8] that i've ever seen with an upside down coil. It hasn't happened yet but I am waiting for the day when the wire falls out of the coil and I am left scratching my ar*e as to what happened, and then three hours later I figure out the coil isn't connected.

thank for the info, i took a look at my LH radiator support and indeed there were the two mounting holes already there. the car is a '77 so the engine bay is almost identical to the factory V8s. ive also started a website about the conversion if anyone's interested. feedback is always welcome. the address is <p>http://www.et.byu.edu/~jmv/mgbv8.htm
