MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Edelbrock 500 conversion - throttle pedal travel.

Hi

I've finally got my conversion running well. So time to sort out the details.

I've installed an Edelbrock 500 carb and Offenhauser "JWR" manifold. I find that I cannot adjust the throttle linkage and pedal stop to achieve full opening of the secondary throttle butteflies. Has anyone with this carb. suffered the same problem and overcome it?? If so, how?

Also, why the heck did they choose to mount the carburettor back to front??

Cheers,

Nick

Nick,

I have RPI's conversion installed by them. You can see pics of the install at http://www.apphosting.com/mgstuff/v8/

As for back to front, where are the mixture screws? Front of engine or rear? Mine are at the front.. Isn't that where they should be - ??

I will take a look at my carb tomorrow filter off and see if it is opening all the way - it feels like it is - and will let you know how it's set up. Oh, RPI did install a new cable - are you using theirs or your own? My original V8 cable didn't come close to working.

Cheers,

Hi Neil

I have the RPI kit, but I installed it myself. Which Manifold do you have? (That's what dictates which way round your carb goes.) Though, on reflection, it would have gone the other way too, but I arranged it so that the primaries feed into the two individual holes, and the secondaries feed the single, larger hole.

On mine the idle mixture screws are on the back. This orienation makes the choke really stiff as the cable has to turn through 180 degrees, it may also affect the throttle travel.

You can see pictures of the whole kit at http://www.bluebonnet.demon.co.uk/mg

I look forward to hearing about your installation.

Pics of my installation.

You can see there is a T arrangement for the valve cover breathers (I read your website). I also installed the Factory V8 Flametraps to help prevent oil getting sucked into the Aircleaner. So basically two hoses to a T just behind the carb, then single line to the Air cleaner. If you have the Factory MG covers they _will interfere with the Carb as the exits for the hoses much up the controls. Thats why I have the (ugh) Rover covers on. The only other option was machining the MG covers - no way!! <G>

The brake booster take off should also be at the rear. I would say you just need to swing your manifold 180deg and all will be well. I also included detailed shots of the Choke and Accelerator controls. Any questions just ask. I can shoot more pics too if you need them.

HTH,
Neil - BTW, there are pics of my Mallory/Lumenition install if anyone is interested.

Thanks for your detailed reply. In the end I went for a tee arrangement (saved me 12 quid for the K and N vent that I was going to use...) and used the P6 flame traps (small, grey ones) for the breather.

I did wonder why you didn't have the MG rocker covers, and your reason has saved me the ar*e-ache of buying them and finding that they don't fit.

From looking at your pictures, it seems that I have simply put the carb on back-to-front!!! (Not the manifold as, clearly, the thermostat housing has to be at the front, and the heater tap at the back.)

My assumption was, that the primaries should feed into the two smaller holes, and the secondaries should feed into the one large hole. (Perhaps an American reader would care comment on this, as they will have more experience of this kind of setup??)

(You can see a photo of the inlet holes I refer to at http://www.bluebonnet.demon.co.uk/mg/images/manifold_hi_res.jpg )

I'll be taking the whole lot off at the week-end to fix a mystery water leak (water is often lying on the valley cover) and will reinstall carb the other way round.

Thanks a lot for the response and I will report back after the week-end's activities.

Best regards

Nick

The MG covers can be made to work if you really want to use them.

I did. Now, everyone can plainly see that my car has an MG V8 engine. It says so right on the valve covers! Yes, I'm using a Carter 500 and the repro. MGV8 covers. Looks great. See link. Not the best engine detail shot, though.

I was determined to make the valve covers work. I removed the pressed-in tubes from the covers, threaded the holes, and screwed in filed-down brass 90 degree elbows and added hose barbs. One side goes back to the air cleaner and the other side with PCV into the front of the carb. Linkages just clear.
