MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - engine fitting
Should I fit the motor and box together or box first then mate them together its a V8 also should I fit the front suspension Xmember before the motor or after its all a bit tight in there exhaust should be no problem as I am using RV8 manifolds its a new shell so trying not to take off the paint when fitting the motor |

Hi Paul, When I fitted my Rover 4.2 with a T-5 gearbox, I installed them as one unit. The crossmember was already fitted. Then I installed the RV8 manifolds and lastly I installed the steering rack. Regards Tony |

thanks Tony that was the way I was hoping for |

Definitely engine & box together, and you need to place the RV8 manifolds in the engine bay prior to installation they will not go in afterwards unless you have cut excessively large holes, hopefully the supplier also provided the templates.I also confirm that you need 2-3 spacers on the offside of a uk car. I am having to install them in mine and am advised that an engine steady bar is essential. On the subject of faulty replacement parts i am having to replace the steering rack that came from MGOC because it was stiffening up with use and not self centering, have heard of another rack that locked up completely! Good luck with the conversion Kevin Jackson. |

I got the templates for the inner wings and welded them in they look good I have had the motor in but it was without the xmember fitted boy is it tight also had the manifolds on and they fit well this will be a nice car when it is finally finnished but some repo parts are crap fitting |

When you fit the engine gearbox combination, it may help to have the back of the car as high as poss and the front as low as it will go. Once the box is in the tunnel you can raise the front and work on the mounting. Roger |

kevin, If your car (like my (ex-)rubber bumper) had the engine steady bar under the old gearbox(it ran from the gearbox crossmember to the back of the 1800 engine) then you can use that, and its various rubber bits, for a steady bar. It fits almost exactly across the back of the V8 engine and locates under the hinge. Do make sure that you bolt a fair sized piece of steel plate under the attachment point in order to distribute the load, when I rev the engine the whole car moves (which is kind of exiting). |

Has anyone used one of those plastic reproduction engines for fitting? Only weighs 20 lbs or so, has threads for bolting headers, water pump, etc. Seems like it would make trial fitting easier. The last one I saw on ebay, the bid was at about $25 or $30. |

Sorry, I don't think they have any rover replicas, I think just Ford, Chevy, Mopar. I kinda got this thread mix up with the Ford engine thread. |

Thanks for the heads up on the replica block. It will make pre fitting the motor and headers alot easier. No need to keep inserting the real engine. I noticed in his other items he has another 302. Garret |
