MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Engine Specifications

I am assembling a 1980 rover 3.5 and need the head bolt torque specifications and pattern or better yet all engine specs. If someone has a scanner and other usefull info I would be very grateful for the images.

thanks, Leon

Long and medium length bolts are 65 to 70 ft lbs and the short bolts are 40 to 50 ft lbs.

Try and get the Haynes workshop manual for the SD1 which is number 365 in the haynes list or
ISBN 1 85010 363 1. Haynes also have Range Rover manuals as well and the up to 1985 copy I have is number 606 in Haynes listing, ISBN 1 85010 189 2. I mention the date of the range Rover one as there has been much change since 1985 so there will probably be an alternative manual for later cars.

hi re head bolts short bolts should be done up to no more then 25 ft/pounds,if you do them up to specs it cocks the head to one side and the head gasket blows pressurising the crankcase causing oil leaks.
for confirmation go to RPI.

Mark,

Good point and one that I can confirm does occur. I have in fact followed a slightly lower still setting and thread sealant for those 4 outer bolts, which have been deleted on all recent Rover engines. I have only kept them for the purpose of it looking correct, rather than having obvious holes.

Roger,

Are you able to tell me when the 4 outer short bolts were deleted?

Roger,
What thread sealant do you use for those head bolts, and do you see a problem with loosening just the lower bolts and re-torquing to the lower value? (I have my rebuilt engine under the bench, it has not been filled with coolant or started yet). Have you been able to locate a sealant that is equivalent to the factory sealant EC7226 mentioned in the V-8 Workshop Manual supplement?
Cheers,

David,

The bolts were deleted along with amny other changes to the engine for the 1995 model year. However on some of our Range Rovers from 1992 test composite gaskets were being used with the 4 outer bolts just removed.

Paul,

I use a standard off the shelf thread seal from Loctite. The sealant on the gaskets was Wellseal from a company I will have to find out as I have had the tube so long the outside has lost the comnpany details.

Paul,
you realy need to look at the later manuals as the original V8 manual is now very old. The correct stuff to use on the threads and which now replaces 3MEC 776 is Loctite 572 which is appears to be a PTFE paste which Loctite sells for sealing threads on pipe fittings ETC
