MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Engine stand

Hi

I've got the engine out of my roadster to replace a leaking rear main seal. I bought an engine stand to make life a little easier but didn't really think it through - the obvious way to mount the engine is via the geabox mounting holes.

Clearly I can't do this as I will need access to the end of the crank. Has anyone managed to mount the engine on a stand by some other means? I'm thinking of bolting it to the stand using some of the exhaust mountings. Reckon it'll work??

Cheers,

Nick,

It seems to me that I’ve seen some motor mounts that hold the motor by the motor mount boltholes. To change the rear main seal you will need to remove the oil pan/sump and that will require the engine stand that you have to rotate the motor. You should have long bolts and spacers to give some access to the back of the motor.

Nick,
Have you pulled the bellhousing? My stand bolts up to the bellhousing mount holes on the rear of the engine block. Then you can carefully rotate the engine, preferably with the help of a friend, to pull the pan and get to the crank.

Nick,
Does your engine stand have a flat plate to mount the engine, or hollow "fingers" with long bolts that space the engine out a bit from the stand? If you have a flat plate, you might have to fabricate spacers and use longer bolts to get enough clearance to get to the rear main seal mount. Of course, you should also remove the flywheel before mounting the engine on the stand.

Hope this helps,

if you have bought the heavy duty machine mart stand then your block will bolt straight on to the adjustable arms via the bell housing bolt holes. I built my engine on this with out any problems including fitting the main seal.only thing you can't fit of course is the flywheel regards adrian

I have photos of my engine in its stand, on my website.
It clearly shows the use of tube fingers, which left plenty of clearance to fit the rear crank seal.

Thanks for your comments. I guess I'll bolt it to the rear of the engine, after all. In my case access is not as good as it could be as my conversioon utilises a steel adaptor plate which almost completely covers the rear of the engine.

I suppose I'll have to set it on wooden blocks while I work on that area.

Can't you take the plate off?
