MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Exhaust

I'm considering replacing the standard two box exhaust system on my chrome bumper roadster with a less restrictive system. Any advice with regard to experiences of using replacement systems would be gratefully appreciated. I don't really want to get into rejetting the SU's etc as I want to retain resonable fuel economy but I do want a better sounding system.

Gee, I'm using a standard type SS 2-box exhaust on my 74V8 conversion (4bbl), and while it runs simply great, I sure wouldn't want the thing to be any louder. It was my understanding that "less restrictive" per se isn't always a boon. For one thing, I gather that a little back pressure is supposed to really help the idle.

When I first got my V8 on the road back in 97 I used a standard twin box system with Cast manifolds.
As the centre box rattled like hell I soon replaced the centre box with straight pipe and at the same time fitted tubular block hugger manifolds.
I also modified the rear section raising the rear box to make it nearly horizontal. A 2.5 inch tailpipe with inward roll finished it off.
As a result I had a system that looked really good and sounded fantastic.

I'm in a fairly similar situation to Charles. My (V8 conversion) roadster has a mild steel exhaust which has sprung a leak, but would be repairable with a bit of welding at least for a while.

I'm on a moderately tight budget for the next few months at least, and would be fairly keen on an RV8 manifold from what I've read.

The questions are, am I best off doing as little as possible until I can afford to replace the whole system, or is there no advantage to doing it piecemeal. I've no ability to do any of it myself, and a look under the bonnet suggests to me that replacing the manifolds is a fairly labour intensive job.

Secondly, what is a good all round exhaust, and who stocks them. My car is my daily commuter, so while usability and refinement(?) are important, a nice noise and more power are always welcome:-)

Charles,

I also have a roadster with a 2 box exhaust system and i will always stick to this. An 1 box system is great when you drive the car always with the top down. If you drive an 1 box system with the top up, the car will be very noisy.

I have the SS big bore single silencer exhaust system sold by the MGOC.

It is quieter with the V8 than it was with the 1870cc 4 pot that preceeded it!
