MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Fitting air conditioning

I am in the process of fitting a Rover V8 to my GT and would like the comfort of air conditioning. Is there any one out there that has undertaken this exercise and if so what doner vehicle air con did they use. I do have access to a Rover SD1 with air is this suitable or too bulky as I would want to use existing air vents etc.

I can't say if the Rover unit would work, but A/C was an optional accessory on some US spec Bs. The condensor mounted under the dash on the right side, so for a British or Aussie car it may not fit on the left. Perhaps someone has photos of the unit that might help you.

I have installed an A/C unit in a late model B. It uses two triangular EYEBALL air vents on either end of the dashboard. They snuggle right up into that area. Then two flex tubes go to the central outlets in the center of the dash. This was on an 78 MGB with original engine. The air handler went up and almost into the area right behind the glove box. Everything was left intact. No cuts were needed at all. For entry of the two supply hoses I used the rectangular hole that has the karge rubber plug in it. I made a plate that supported the hoses and still kept the rubber plug as a seal around them. It did a fine job of sealing. I mounted the condensor core in front of the radiator and with a push fan in front of that. That fan came on with the A/C unit. Living in central Florida and our summer heat the car did not overheat.
The hot rod boys have a great list of small units available.

You can install A/C in the MGB. I have done a couple of.....to make a really neat and compact installation I recommend the evaporator unit from Vintage Air. It is the Mini evap that uses the electric soleniods instead of vacumn for the operation of the diverter and water valve. You will do away with the MGB water valve...have much better heat and the A/C is wonderful. This unit will fit between the hood hinges, but all the metal work where the old heater resided previously needs to be cut out and in the cockpit new panels added. It is worth the extra work to get the evap fitted into place. You will need to source a condensor from a different company as Vintage does not have one that fits in front of the radiator. For the radiator I recommend the aluminum one from D&D to handle the extra workload. All the controls will fit in the original location, so from the inside all will look stock. The center vents are used in addition to the footwell and defroster vents. You will not regret the extra work once you are enjoying the benefits. D&D makes the brackets for the Sanden Compressor.....so you have a tidy installation.

There are many ways to complete this installation! Here are three examples:

Thank you for your feed back guys.

I can attest to the quality of the Vintage Air products. A Vintage Air kit was used to replace the old and broken A/C in my 1969 Chevy C10 pickup. The quality of all the components are top notch. And, the support from the company first-rate.

I WILL use their components for my MGBV8.

Good luck T.

look at the Danhard catalog also, they have some smaller units than vintage and there prices are a lot more reasonable, www.danhardinc is their website , jim
