MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Force Fuel Injection

I just stumbled onto an interesting web site for those of you that are looking at
fuel injection conversions.
Check out http://force-efi.com/
The setups look like they are made for the MG - low profile and use the existing
single plane manifolds. The only issue is cost - ouch!
Erich Hovley

Pretty tasty stuff, that. How steep is the tariff? ... I didn't see it listed.
Harry

Blast you Erich!!! Why do you taunt me like this, don't you know I'm broake already!! :-)

I have a Ford EFI set-up for a truck sitting in my garage, little drilling/machining to my performer intake would surely get the injectors mounted, then remains some sort of TB.. grrrr...
Larry Embrey

Check at the bottom of the page - the conversion is $2850, a kit that requires
machine work is $2350.
Ouch. Mostly a money is no object setup, but the good news is that it would fit, the electronics are there and programmable and it looks GOOD.
Erich Hovley

Larry,
Sorry 'bout that. I just found out that the semiconductor fab that I work at is being closed. Looks like my project is on hold for a while too. Guess I can just keep adding to my 'virtual' conversion and pray that a bucket of money falls in my lap. With all of the stuff you could do (5.2 liter from Rimmer, Force Fuel injection, Currie Enterprises rearend, steel bodywork changes, etc. etc.) it's only the money that's holding me back from building the rocket of my dreams...
Erich Hovley

Don't know too much about their products, but that is a very well put-together website; fast AND professional-looking. If I ever get to a point in my car's development that I can use, or AFFORD! their products, I will, most definitely be checking out their products.

Regards to all,

57 degrees here today, down to 15 tonight... eeegadzz!
Steve

You could probably buy a spare v8 and have both of the FI plenums machined to fit under a B hood for that kinda money (note: the page reads 'From 2895'). And yet it would look so very coooool.
Erich, when that bucket hits you, email me, I'll drive over and try to catch one in the passenger's seat of my B.

57 º tonight, 90 º tomorrow (sorry Steve). I thought the desert had the biggest temp swings?

Wow, great site, added to my favorites. There is always next year.

You can buy the fuel injector bungs and weld these to a carbed intake then get some fuel rails fitted, then buy a flattish throttle body and make a sheet metal elbow for it to bolt onto the manifold with.

www.probeindustries.com offers a set up like this for a Ford for about $750, maybe they can do a one-off for a Rover?

Speed-Pro has their computer system for a tune of $1500 and up, which uses GM sensors Sequential Fuel Injection. Accell has their DFI but most racer's use the Speed-Pro system for some reason. The Ford EEC-IV uses sequential Fuel injection too, which is a plus but to be user programmable for everything a $1024 piggyback computer must be purchased...EPEC, which can make the Speed-Pro system look promising.

Thanks for posting the link. I like the looks of that Force setup so much; it would keep the 4-bbl air cleaner there and would look so "right" in the MG compared to some of the EFI systems I have seen. Hard to justify the cost, though!... I reckon you guys have said EFI V8s can get about 25+ mpg. I get about 20mpg w/the carb. So that's perhaps a 20% savings on gas; using round #s, that's ~$.30 per gallon. To justify $3K you'd be talking about 10,000 gallons of gas, or some 200,000 miles of driving! I realize there are other incremental benefits to EFI as far as emissions, cold-starting, etc. but still. Think I'll have to stick with the carb for the moment, seems to work passably well and my learning curve has barely gotten up to understanding it, let alone a full-blast injection system.

FWIW I've been taking fuel consumption figures on my Factory car whilst touring Ireland and the UK. The car is now Weber 500 equipped and I've been seeing 16mpg in total gridlock type traffic, 24-25mpg in mixed country roads and 27-28mpg on freeways at 70mph in overdrive. Not too bad overall.

Cheers,
Neil

Good numbers Niel!! I hope my V8 can do that, my 18V seems to be getting in the 20Mgp avg range. I do about 50% sideroads and 50% highway driving.. Course I am usualyl dipping heavily int o the Dual SU's so "I get what I pay for" which is pure fun...
Larry Embrey

are you guys talking at cross purposes considering the difference between our UK gallon and the (smaller) US one. I am seeing around 20 to the (UK)gallon but would like to improve on that. Getting 20 to the (US) gallon on standard carbs would therefore appear to make this possible.
IAN THOMSON

James D., I'd like some information on that auxiliary computer you say is needed for the Ford EEC-IV. Do you have a link or two?
Jim Blackwood

Hi Ian,

I'm talking about UK gallon. 24-25 is easy on mixed roads in my car, and I've even seen 28-29 mpg on motorways in the UK on one trip. I've spoken to quite a few stock V8 owners who get even better fuel consumption than me so I don't think it's way out of the ordinary.

If I'm stuck in traffic or foot down it can go as low as 14, it's very variable. I'm pleased that the Weber 500 I'm running which offers better power and pickup can also return similar economy numbers to the SU's. Maybe you're running a little rich - ? Maybe not, it appears totally dependant on the application of the right foot and the roads.

Only thing about the Weber IMO, is it feels a little too large for the 3.5. It tends to bog a little in the midrange but top end is savage. I'm going to make up a plate to drop the 500 to a 400 per Glenn Towery and hopefully that'll improve things further.

Cheers,
Neil
