MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - fuel injection mods

I'm getting ready to have the hard parts- intake, trumpet assembly, plenam- machined for hood clearance, & I need some idea as to how to remove the individual trumpets to machine the base & shorten the trumpets.

Any help from those who have actually done this?

Thanks-

Jim

Bake it in an oven to warm up the metal. Aluminum and Steel expand and contract at different temperatures. That should get them out.

Remember to measure the height difference between the short and the long trumpets before you remove them.
They come out very easily by the way.
Peter

Jim, just grab them with a pair of multigrips & jiggle them from side to side. They should pull out. Barrie E

Hi Jim,
I have removed my trumpets for the same process as you two days ago. Don't try prising the trumpets out, it's effort you dont need and you may dammage the trumpets. I baked it all in an oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minute and the trumpets just pull out with little or no effort. As stated earlier, remember to measure the heights before removal. I took the ally parts to a local machine shop yesterday to get quotes for the machining. He said that the machining of the lower unit (15mm off the bottom, redrilling the locating dowel holes and 3-4 mil off the top) would only cost about $35 cash. The hard one would be how to securely mount the top plenum cover secureley to machine the 8-9 mil off that, He said it would probably cost $75 cash for that. All surprisingly cheap I thought!!

So its off to the shop this weekend where we have an old oven used for powdercoating. No point in smelling up my kitchen.

Thanks to all who responded.

This is a fairly precise operation - I imagine you have seen : http//geoff.richmond.users.btopenworld.com/mgbv8/

or something like it.

Jim, I love to see all the work you guys make for yourself! When you take .800 off the botom of the trumpit stack, there is no need to do anything to the plenam! You need to get the motor as low as you can with the motor mts. & the steel hood will close. I have done 6 F/I Bs now & thay all fit. We cut the trumpit stack with the tubes in place, when we do it this way you do not have to cut the tubes later.

Hi Glen,
Can you please expand on how you can get 0.8" off the bottom of the ram housing without fouling the fuel rail etc? My parts re at the machine shop now.
Thanks

Glen, I don't think you're suggestion would work with a C/B crossmember & blockhugger extractors.Solve one problem & you usually create another. In this case steering column clearance. Barrie E

Barrie, my 74 chrome gt with O/E crossmember & hugger heabers & E.F.I! The motor was backed up 1.5 inchs for A.C. & I saw to it that the stearing U joint stays away from the exhaust header bolt. Tony you take a 1/2 X 6" ext. & a big hammer & hit one, at a time of the 4 feet that bolt the rail to the intake & it will go down .250 to .300

Guys, I've seen & driven Glenn's cars - he did exactly what he said he did & it worked....hoods close & cars are sleepers (oh yeah, sleeper MGB GT that pulls 2 motorcycles down interstate at 85mph!)

Glenn...I'm pulling the good running engine/tranny out of the '80 SD1, junking the Rover, & putting engine in a '68 GT - gonna do it just like you said.....oh, the '79 V8 roadster goes into body shop tomorrow!!

For the record Glenn, had you better not add a couple of words about the differing height and shapes of the various Rocker covers.
RMW

I don't need to, I like & use the early cover that has ROVER on the top with NO mods.
Glenn

Tony
You might wanna hang onto a few of the parts ie. calipers and rear end from the SD1 as they can be useful...
Jake

Jake...will use the calipers on the '68....will part out everything off Rover I can sell before I crush what's left
