MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Gearbox for Rover V8
Gearbox (LT77) decided to packup last week, dificult to change lots of bearing noise etc. Looking for replacement in this part of the world new of good second hand. Any reccomendations please, do I need Vitesse heavy duty type or is standard SD1 ok? Mild 3.5 V8, with 178 bhp, dyno setup a few weeks ago. What other cars have suitable boxes? are Land rover ones suitable? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Try Rimmers of Lincoln and make sure it is a LT77S. |

Richard, EBay usually has at least one for sale, but you take your chance with quality. Locally there is a guy who usually has second-hand ones, he dismantles Sd1's and Vitesses, do you want his number ? Mike |

I suggest that you opt for the later Rover gearbox - the R380 which is the one used in the last of the RV8s etc.. Fitting is simple, and you should be able to get a new box for somewhat less than £1k. Richard - the later LT77s had much improved lubrication. The German Gentrag R380 is a better box but much more expensive - you may need to think about bellhousings if you decide to change. |

Richard, The LT77 box serial number suffix D was the last type fitted to the SD1, it has the largest bearings and highest 5th gear ratio. I’ve never heard of or seen reference to a LT77S before and as far as I know all versions had the same oil pump with fibre gears. Was the improved lubrication the oil, or some difference within the box? The R380 box is a direct replacement for the LT77 and bolts to the existing bellhousing without any modification. Geoff |

You might think about putting in a toyota supra box. Better then the Rover one. Smaller lighter, smoother etc. The Bell housing is between 400 and 600 Australian . You need the clutch fork but not the slave or clutch etc.(divide by 2.5 for pounds) and the boxes are around 700 Aust'for a guaranteed reconditioned one. They are just about unbreakable (good to 550BHP they claim) so you could get one from a wrecker for much less and feel pretty safe. The toyota corolla box also fits the Bell housing but it's not quite as strong though I've never heard of anyone haveing trouble. |

Richard, If you want to rebuild your old box, www.autogear.co.uk sell a kit. Pete |

I am going to be converting my chrome bumper and am very particular about making modifications to anything. I did some research and may have found a company who offers a transmission, with kit and all, to replace the weak MGB trans. I have yet to contact them about the bellhousing or if one will work with the V8. Here is the link... http://www.hi-gearengineering.co.uk/frames.htm |

The transmission they offer installs with no modifications to the tunnel. The shifter stays in the exact same place, and comes with a special crossmember and other components. The bellhousing though may need to be changed for the V8 clutch..I do not know if they offer this as well. Ihave yet to contact them on this as well as on the points addressed in my previous post. |
