MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Gearbox Noise
Hi I am finally driving my conversion after 6 months to check out and fix any little faults, I have what i believe is a good gearbox fitted (LT77 Type), When i put the clutch in i get a whiring noise, it is fine when the clutch is out. I have only covered a couple of miles so don't know if it will clear. Could it be down to either the type of oil used? or could i possibly get rid of the noise by bleeding the system again? Thanks Graham |

GLG, Sounds like it might be the clutch release bearing. Can you tell what area the noise is comming from? Could also be a bad bearing on the input shaft of the trany. Maybe others can be more helpfull. Mike |

Almost certainly it is the throwout (clutch release) bearing. Don't hold in the clutch any longer than you have to (use neutral) and give it a little time to improve. If it does not fixing it will require removal of the tranny, but it can be used like that for quite awhile without hurting anything. If you notice any change other than getting quieter, especially any sudden change, it'd be a good idea to replace it. Especially if you are using a htob. Jim |

Thanks It seems to be getting a bit quieter, it has been sat for about a year. Fingers crossed don't want to be taking the gearbox out again so soon. Graham |
