MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Gearbox questions!

Q. Will the old LT77 SD1 gearbox parts fit on to a Range Rover R380 cast centre section to produce a stronger/ better gearbox.

Q. What are the Range Rover gear ratio’s compared to the LT77 SD1 box.

Q. How much more power will this new set-up take than the old one.

Roger Parker is probably your best bet for this. He contributes from time to time (and lists his email), as other pressures allow, I imagine. From what I know of Roger I think he would be happy to help.

Thanks Paul,

I only ask because I was offered an R380 unit cheap and thought I my be able to merge it with my LT77. Otherwise I was going to look into Toyota Supra or 2WD Cosworth options.

Paul

Go for the inexpensive R380 and simply fit it in place of the LT77.

I have an R380 in my B GTV8, it is excellent, and more robust than the LT77.

Be careful about the R380 as this box was also used in some commercial vehicles which makes first, second and third gears a bit low.

Good luck

Thanks Guys,

I have since heard that the R380 is good for 300 hp which is the figure I am eventually aiming for.

Make note of my e-mnail boys as I amd getting less and less time to visit here. I get quite a few MG related messages every week, but a few more V8 ones won't cause a problem.

The R380 gearbox has the same basic case as the LT77 and so has the same boss at the base which has a machined surface onto which the gearbox ID is stamped. Yes Mark is quite correct in that some commercial vehicle applications, like the LT77 before it, have lowered intermediate ratios, the exact details of which I don't have.

Now I haven't anyconfirmation of this but I have an image of a 1995 RV8 gearbox which has an 18A code. This may indicate that the gearbox sequencing has reverted to the same start point as we saw with the LT77. If so then the Commercial gearboxes will be 30A prefixes.

A benefit is that the LT77 external parts such as bell housing, and gear remote will all bolt straight onto the R380. If the box comes from a 4X4 the end casing is different so the appropraite R380 2WD end case would be needed.
