MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - GT Gas Strut Conversion

My wife had a serious shoulder injury 18 months ago which has left her very weak with limited movement. We use my V8 as everyday transport and she is finding it more and more difficult to manage the rear hatch.

Does anyone know of a Gas Strut converion
which would make the rear GT hatch easier.

The car is a factory V8 and I would not want to damage the integrity of the car.

Is there a direct swop, without modification, so that I could replace the original hinges if it became necessary?

Comments very welcome. Thanks. Martin

(I have copied this to other threads to get maximuim coverage - my apologies if you have seen it before>)

Ian Pender sells them, but they do require drilling as they do not use the existing tabs on the hatch. I don't think there's any way to do it without drilling new holes.

Thanks Ted - don't know of I.Pender - does he have a website or addresss?? Would have to think about drilling though on an original car.

I have used his struts on my GT for several years & am very happy with them.

Installation uses the original body mount, but requires 2 small brackets to be fastened to the hatch with #8 sheet metal screws. These are small holes that could be easily filled with a bit of body calk & painted with a touchup brush.

I have Pender's struts on my B/GT front and rear. Work and fit nicely. No welding involved...bolt on conversion. rick

Very helpful - thanks everyone. Ian Pender seems the way to go. Will look into it. Thanks again.
