MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 'Hairblower' Rover 3500?

Anyone know of supercharging a Rover 3.5 liter. What to think about and how to do it?
Any comment about this object would be of interrest.
I would like to get more power without changing from my rover p6 engine. It just fits so nicely into the car. Problem is the SAAB or Volvo turbochargers will not fit in the engineroom exept if i put in long tubes witch will give me a long backlash witch i want to avoid.

There used to be a conversion kit based on the "Sprintex" supercharger for Range Rover with V8. Don't know if this is still available or anything similar. Check out www.rpiv8.com for options.

For hood clearnace, you will want to avoid the "roots"
type blowers, like Eaton that sit on top of intake manifold. You will need a centrifigal type like Powerdyne, Vortec, etc. C.A.P.A in Australia makes a supercharger kits for rover V8, expensive though. You might also consdider enlarging you own engine through modifications or buying a 4.6L, either way it will fit with the same external dimensions as a 3.5.

Manfried,
About the time I finished the physical parts for the intercooled and injected Eaton M-90 I realized that it is quite feasible to invert the blower beneath a custom intake and close the hood on it. I'll probably not do that project, as I'm too busy with other enterprises and am quite happy with my MG's performance and appearance, but if you want to try it I'd be happy to lend some assistance in the form of advice and such. The resulting package should have reasonable appeal for a number of Rover applications so there may be a market for it.

Manfried,
Jim would know what is possible. It REALLY comes down to what you want from the car and what modifications to external appearance you are willing to make and be happy with. Jims car is an absolute monster and I for one know I would think 2x before challenging him on the road or track. He has spent probably 1000's of hours designing and fitting that entier front end on the car and did an amazing job!!

If you are trying to keep your stock hood, then you are in for a bit if a battle. The rake of the MGB hood is what makes conversions and alterations so difficult. I could run a taller air cleaner except for the fact that the front edge would hit the hood. I have always dreamed about a blower for my car, but all the mustang/5.0 blowers sit a touch to high on the right side in front of the head. NOW, one COULD make a custom braket and push the blower a bit lower ad farther to the righ side of the car. It all comes down to what you can and are willing to do to install it. Then comes tuning.

With a blower motor, some basic things are considered standard motor tips.. I am not an expert, these are just things I have learned while hanging with some mustang people. The motor should have low CR, usually 8.5:1 or 9.5:1, anything higher and you will be asking for a blowout if you are going to run real boost worthy if the time to do the extra work. Boost will naturally increase the CR in the heads, so if you already have 10.5:1 you will be drastically stressing the engine. Forged internals are recommended but not needed especially if you stick with above rule. You will need to tune your carb/EFI to provide extra fuel when the boost comes on, if you buy a kit, then you will have what is needed to handle this. Gear blower are better than ball drive blowers. all the newer blower, novi2000, etc i believe are gear, but you will see ball types around all the time. START SMALL on boost, most blowers will have different size cogs(pulleys) to adjust the RPM of the blower and thus the boost. start small (2psi?), get it tuned in, and run for a while, if want more, then step up. I ave seen a few people go for it right off the bat and not have an engine to put boost into.

I hope none of this scares you from it. There is a learning curve with it like with anything, including the MG V8 you have. take your time, read a bit, talk to people with cars (rover or not) that use blower. a pusshrod motor is a pushrod motor to a certain degreee.see what they have run into and compare to your set-up. Like I said Jim has proven it can be done, lets see who is the next to do it, and how.

Thanks for all your advice. It will make life easyer for me. A friend of mine is coming over as soon as he comes back from abroad. He has some ideas because he managed to put a turbo in his Mini Clubman. He says anything fits as long as you got small fingers and tools. We will se.
