MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - How bad are Strombergs?
|I'm in the process of completing a Midget V8 conversion. In order to retain existing bonnet lines I'm unable to use Webber or Holly carbs (Bummer) but have modified rover manifold with the Clive Wheatley rear facing adaptor. The SUs will require two dimples in the bonnet but the Strombergs wont. I'm aware that SU tune parts are more easily available but will Strombergs work with uprated cams etc? Could anyone suggest suppliers or general advice? - All welcome|
|I would not go down this route. By far the best twin carbs set up from my experience are the early P6 manual choke ones. No starting problems, and work fine. The Stombergs I have come across have been ex-SD1 and have that horrible enrichment device which can cause problems. Also the diaphrams can split. If you can stay away!|
There was a special version of the SU HIF6 that was offered on the Factory MGB-GT V-8. These had a shortened "chimney" atop the piston dome and also had a lower profile damper rod cap. You might try to source a couple of those. Try Clive Wheatley or Beer of Houghton.
Did they ever produce the Stromberg without the enrichment device (Was it for US emmissions or something). I'm not worried about diaphrams as they can be replaced, more worried about availability of needles/jets for performance applications.
Has anyone tried this route for power? ....and failed or succeeded?
I think I already have a set of the short turret SUs but they're still too tall. I think the twin dimples will have to be "installed".
All the SD1's I've seen had the enrichment device. Try ringing up a 4X4 or Landrover specialist, say RPI in Norfork and they will probably know all about them.
I do know many cars used to have srombergs in the 70's with manual chokes so check out some classic Triumph specialists for advice here. Hope this helps
If you need to put a "power bulge" into the bonnet, there's a really easy method. Just install the carbs on the engine, then give the bonnet a great big slam! :)
