MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Inner Wings

The factory V8s and later 1800cc cars had extra dishing in the inner wings. Was this to clear the exhaust manifold?

If it was, do you still need the extra clearance when using RV8 manifolds that go out through holes in the inner wing?

David,
I just cut the holes in the inner wings and I have not dished the inner wings. The dishing on the later model Bs was directly above the top of the shock absorber the hole for the exhaust manafoild is behind this a bit. There is a good photo of the hole in Roger Williams book at the end it shows a RV8 Shell with the re-enforced hole and the dishing in front of the hole. I cut the hole in approx the same place. However, the RV8 styled manafoilds that I have place the exhaust too close to the brake line under the guard. You will have to let me know how your installation goes.

David,

Clem already described where the holes go for the RV8 exhaust. The extra dishing in the inner wings was added to all models to increase panel strength according to David Knowles’ book The MG V8 Twenty-One Years On. The factory cast exhaust manifolds were designed to clear the inner wings, but I don’t know if that dish is a factor. I do know the block-hugger style headers on my conversion hit the lower edge of the dish and require additional work.

I did add the inner dish to my 73B. It was required on my car for clearance at the clyinders # 1 and 2 exhaust tubing. My engine sits low in the chasis, I am also using the RV8 manifolds.

Bill,
Have you got any photos of your RV8 manifold installation. I am having trouble with interference with the brake lines and exhaust manifold under the wings. How much clearance do you have in that area?

David,
Sorry to hi-jack your thread no-one was answering mine.

I do have some photos. I will look to see if they will be of any help to you.
The down pipe for the RV8 header is approx. 3 inches to the rear of the brake hose/pipe mounting bracket on my car.
