MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Light weight Tailgate

Is anyone making a Fiberglass or Composite tailgate for a GT?

Thanks for the help, Tom

Tom, I do not know of anyone making a lightweight hatch for the mgb gt...I hope there is though..one good way to take a bunch of weight out of the hatch is to repalce the glass with plastic (lexan?)

Does anyone have any experience with Honey Bourne or Smith and Deakin to recommend one over the other? Is there a quality or customer service difference worth noting?
John Perkins

I woul like to thank Mike, Nick, Michel and John for the response. It has been very helpful. I would like to see if someone can answer Johns question.

Hi
I'm sorry that I cannot help any further.... at one point I was going to buy a sebring kit from one of these firms, but changed my mind before seeing any of their panels in the flesh. If it helps I have not heard any adverse comments about any of them, but if prior experience with other fibreglass suppliers is anything to go by, you get what you pay for. The cheapest is not always such a bargain.

Hi
Im using a fibreglass hatch from Smith and Deakin. When I bought mine I had a choice of a skin only or one fitted with a frame.
I went for the skin only for maximum weight saving.
It was quite difficult to fit without the frame. Ended up with hood pins where the hinges were and spring clips at the bottom edge.
The biggest problem was that the lip which takes the perspex screen was quite small, only about 10mm. Decided to extend the lip by about 20mm then fixed the rear screen with adhesive only ( no bolts) which is masked by a 30mm wide black band round the edge.
Looks very good and very light compared to the original. I could take some pics if anyone is interested.

Mark: I'd like a picture of your hatch setup as well as any comments you might care to make about the quality of the part and the service Smith and Deakin gave you.
