MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Locating a BW T5
I'm new to the V8 conversion stuff, so please bear with my ignorance. I recently acquired an Olds 215 for my '74-1/2 B/GT. I could get a TR7 box from the same source but I don't want to tear up the tunnel enough to make it fit. The T5 seems more attractive. I know I want one from a Camaro-Firebird V8, but what years? I've called a few auto junk yards around here and they've never heard of these! Suggestions, please? Thanks! |

Contact Dan LaGrou at D&D http://www.aluminumv8.com/ He has just about everthing you will need for your conversion, T5 included! |

The T-5 you want will be from a 3rd generation (82-92?) Camaro or Firebird that came with the 305 V8. It'll have a 26 spline input shaft and most likely have a 2.95 1st gear, which will work with the stock 3.91 rear end depending on cam, tire height, etc. The GM V6 T-5's have a 14 spline input shaft and higher 1st gears. The V6 S-truck T-5's have higher gears and also have the shifter further forward, so avoid those. One word of caution, there's a 26 spline V6 4th generation F-body T-5 that was used with a different bellhousing. I think the post-92 V8s got a T-56. Search back a few days and read a thread called "Got my T-5 today" or something like that - there are some good links there. Good luck. |

Allen, unfortunately most of you junk yards now adays are turning into auto parts stores with clueless computer jockeys at the phones/counters. You need any post 1987'ish camaro or Firebird Manual trans. I would stick with 89-93ish?? I am not sure of they changed them at some point like the mustangs did. Try www.car-part.com it is a online searchable database of most of the national wrecking yards. OR call Dan and he will get you everything you need in one nice neat box!! |

Edit to my previous post: When I said the V6 T-5's have "higher" 1st gears, I was speaking in terms of numerically higher. Some of the V6 transmissions had a 4.03 1st (lower than the 2.95, but numerically higher). Just stick with the 3rd genie F-body V8 T-5 and you'll be fine. There was a change from NWC (non-world class) to WC (world class) transmissions sometime in the late 80's. A WC T-5 would be the best, but the NWC should work - just not quite as strong, but strong enough for your engine. GM never put a T-5 behind anything bigger than the 305 CID engine. |
