MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGB Fuel Gauge Resistance Output Specifications

I'm putting the finishing touches on my 77B Rover 4.6L conversion. I've swapped to VDO white face gauges. Last thing I need to do is install the fuel gauge - Trying to find what resistance the stock fuel sending unit measures at empty and full. Anyone have the specs? I could hook up a Ohmmeter, but trying to avoid the hasssle if specs readily available! Thanks in advance for the help!

Not sure why you need to know - unless you haven't bought the gauges yet. Since there are at least a couple of different senders you are better off measuring the one you have, if that will help you purchase the correct gauge. However the standard gauges are adjustable for both full and empty using two slotted plates accesible from the back of the gauge - they may be covered with little cork plugs. Take care, the slotted plates are quite thin and stiff and it is easy to round them out if too small a screwdriver is used.

Paul,

I have not purchase the gauge yet - to your point, I believe there are five different gauges with various resistance outputs for empty and full. So I was going to try to get the one that best fit the range from the gas tank sending unit. I appreciate your comments!

Thanks

Steve,
I did the same thing 2 years ago! Got rid of all the junk from Smiths & Co and installed electronic VDO's
Very good readout by night and easy to calibrate( Odometer)
I ran into the same problem with the fuel gauge and some people responded that had measured the resistance. Will look into the archives and my old e-mail if I can find it.
BTW, that 4.6 will give you plenty of push!
Did you have any RV8 parts on the car?
Werner
PS.: Do you have any pictures?
Werner Van Clapdurp

Werner,

No RV8 parts per say! Fired up for the first time yesterday afternoon to bed cam (20 minutes at 1500-2000 rpms in place) after three months of down time - what a relief! Took out for a short trip to make sure everything worked properly - need insurance / register car. Basic specs are 4.6L (from Woody Cooper) with 1/4 cam, BW T-5 (from IROC Z) with .63 5th and weber T/O bearing, BW 10.5 clutch, Edelbrock 500CFM w/Buick intake, Mallory dual point (will change to electronic), block hugger headers - jet-hot coated (RV8 style in my future!), hi-tork starter, 4-row brass / copper radiator and all white face cockpit series VDO gauges. Relocation of all electricals using OEM wiring with proper tracers. Purchased all ancillary parts for Dan LaGrou - absolutely great person to deal with!

Having said all that, pictures and article to V8 newsletter forthcoming. One last thing... need to sort out a good exhaust system. I'm waitng on Andy's V8 Conversions for a Clive Wheatly 2.5" Big Bore SS system, but getting anxious.

I measured the resistance on the sender from a ' 77 MGB and found it to be very close to that of an Autometer universal sender with 33 ohms filled and 240 ohms empty if I recall correctly.
