MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGB LPG Conversion

Has anyone converted a standard MGB to LPG and what were the results/costs. Is it easy to set up??

Thanks,

Simon

There was a whole thread on this several weeks ago...should be in the archives under LPG. People in the UK and the Netherlands have done it.

Something that is worth mentioning is that a new type of lpg tank is being developed. It has already won an innovation prize over here, but it is really coming into production. The tank is donut shaped and made from kevlar/carbonfibre. Impressive weight saving and even higher safety were reported - looking at the testresults this tank is really bomb-proof.

My installation is already some years old now, and there are perhaps different possibilities. Looking at some info I have, I see different systems.
Normally you have the system with mixer pieces and a two-stage vaporiser. Common for older (carburetted) vehicles. Even in the winter there is hardly need for choke - being a gas, lpg "atomizes" nicely even in low temperatures. This kind of system works more or less like a carburettor.
For some years now there has been a new system: LPI. LPG injection. As you might guess, this injects LPG. You will need mods to manifold plus some other changes. Benefits are clear: small vaporiser (size of a big orange) and better consuption.

LPI combined with the new lightweight tank would be the best you can get. But it is yet unclear to me if these special/new components can be matched to the V8 or four banger and/or if you can purchase the items individually.

For more information you can also contact the founder of the ROCH - Rover Owners Club HOlland, mister Rene Winters. He has run his SD1's and Vitesse from the beginning on LPG and reports that it works flawless. But then, over here in Holland LPG has been a common fuel for over 30 years.

LPG burns a bit hotter, but I check the spark plugs regularly and they still have a beautiful coffee-with-cream colour.

Coming to think of it. I once saw a Morgan Plus 8 with Dual Fuel. It was on Top Gear. Though years ago. So there must be knowledge. Top Gear reports was very favorable then. Maybe check with Morgan?

Practical Classics also had a small article where Wil Holman had a Merc converted. Sounded nice too.

If you want to know more, or just want to talk off-line, feel free to mail me.

The company that produces these lightweight (under 9 kilo) carbon LPG tanks is ALE (Advanced Lightweight Engineering). Their website is http://www.lightweight.nl/
Also a some interesting articles on the UK lpg market.
A side-note to ALE: this is the company that produces glare, a alloy-composite sandwich material used in airplanes. Its roots were in the Technical University of Delft.
