MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - MGBGT front coil springs

I need to change the front springs as the car has sagged noticeably over the last few months of driving. The springs in place are original 1973 BGT springs & seemed fine when the car first went together as a V8, but the body had been sitting for many years less drivetrain.

There has been a bit to say in the past about spring quality & specs, & I only want to do the job once so your advice is sought.

Engine is an iron block/ally head Buick 300, about 40 lbs heavier than the 4 cyl. Are rubber bumper GT springs available in England, and are the specs different than earlier GTs or are they the same as rubber bumper roadster springs as Moss U.S. indicates in their catalog?

I would like standard 1973 BGT ride height, & can certainly live with a slightly heavier spring rate. Per the factory specs on bodies, my rear height is correct, but I am sitting about 1 1/4" low in the front.

Jim, I'm using rubber bumper BGT springs on the front of my latest project (MGA with a 4.0 six) and at least the static height is pretty good. Looks like with the final assembled weight on the front it will sit right where I want it. I got mine from VB. We'll see if they start to sag when the car gets on the road. The extra rate and length might be just what you need for the extra 40 pounds.

Jim,
If you go to the MOSS UK web site they list all the MGB
springs, height, and rates

From what I have seen the spring problem is, was or still is a batch issue. Replaced my springs with springs from VB and haven’t had a problem. Year later a friend replaced his with springs from VB and he had a low rider in 12 months. The springs looked identical. My friend replaced the low rider springs with another VB set and hasn’t had a problem. My VB springs are still holding their hide height.

From your comments & checking sources mentioned, it seems the stiffest of the tall springs are the 73-74 MGBGT. If there is a vendor out there with a set in stock, US or British, let me hear from you. Moss US does not list these springs.

Anyone making a recent purchase, good or bad, I would like to know. As Jim Miller points out, it does seem to be a batch issue.

I would also like to know. My front end seems to be sitting lower now and I have had a few issues dragging exh where I never used to...

i would look at changing to bill guzman's coil over setup, i have been runing it for 2 seasons now and really like it, lots of adjustment possibilites and also spring rates, jim

Hey Jim,
I think the MGOC has the springs your looking for. If they do and yo don't need them for a month they can go in my container that is leaving next wednesday to Charleston SC.
I am in Cambridge untill the 23.
