MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Motor-driven fan, high capacity ... which one?
I am finishing up a conversion using a 3.9 Rover. I have room for an engine-driven fan. What's the best one to use? I believe there is a very high capacity yellow plastic one out there ... anyone know where to get one? |

A Brirish company - RPI - check their web page - sells Pacet fans which they reckon are the tops. I have no experience of them myself and would be interested to know if anyone has tried them I am certainly looking around for better fans than the standard ones I have fitted to my car at present. - RPI -00 44 1603 891209. Ask to speak with Chris. |

Bill, I am running an engine driven fan that came from Glen Towery. It works, no overheating (yet). I have been told that it is a TR6 fan. Not sure about the aluminum center section. Take a peek: http://www.britcars.net/cfloyd.html |

I have a viscous fan off my rebuilt Rover 3.5L I got from RPi (I sort of rep them here for MG V8s). If someone wants it my rates are more than reasonable. |

Don't go the engine driven route, saps power and costs a fortune to add it back in. Demon Tweeks offer a great range of electric fans, from memory the 14" by 7 blade should more than suffice, though with a 3.9 you may need to mod the radiator. See how it runs in traffic first. Whether you use standard exhaust manifolds or exit them through the wings (RV8 style - runs cooler) will also have a bearing. |

David, I'd follow your suggestion except that there isn't sufficient clearance for an electric fan -- the nose of the water pump is only about 1" or maybe 1.5" aft of the backside of the radiator. Just not gonna fit. I do have the two stock plastic fans on the front of the rad, but those alone are woefully insufficient. I was going to put in a SS flex fan, but I have been told that a plastic fan, while perhaps noisier, is going to stay put and not hit other stuff nearby. (Also I was told what may be an old wives' tale, which is that if you have electric pushers on the front, you can't use an electric puller on the rear; rather you _must_ use engine-driven. Is this right?) |

I have a 3500 rover in a 74.5 G.T. that has a TR-7 13 blade fan on the water pump with an alu hub that will turn the stock elect. fans after 2500 r.p.m. & I have an A.C. cond. in front of the radiator I have had her in 106 deg. for 6 hrs. with a 3,000lbs. trailer behind the M.G. & she NEVER left the N on the temp. gauge. & my 4.2 with F/I is set up the same way & she has a trailer hitch also. My 4.9 with 10.5 - 1 comp , ported, Very hot cam, R headers & a T-56 6 speed, I watch her in stop & go trafic for she dose run warmer than the other cars with a stock V-8 radiator. I have the duct from the lower vallance to the radiator & I plug all the holes & gaps in the rad. support plates ( you need all air to GO THROUGH the RADIATOR) I do not like to put all my COOLING in elect. fans & motors! If my water pump fan is not warking, the red lite on the dash is on that tells you that the fan belt has broken! I have used the flexolite stainless steel fan in the early V-8 days, but I found better. In 18 years & 600,000 miles on 5 of my M.G.V-8 I have never over heated one of them (even with the trailer) |
