MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Need Ford Differential Info

Can someone please point me to a good site where I can be educated on Ford rear axles? I've always heard references to 8" and 9" rears but I am confused. Is an 8" a 7.5 or an 8.8? Is a 9" an 8.8 or a 9"? Is a 9" a 9 3/8? Does it all depend on what the definition of "is" is?

David,

8", 8.8", & 9" are all different Ford rear ends (or differentials), so called because that is their respective ring gear diameters.

I read many years ago that the 8" & 9" Ford rears were less efficient (more parasitic horsepower loss) than the Chevy rears. The Ford 8.8" is Ford's version of the 12 bolt Chevy rear.

I've never heard of a 9 3/8" rear, but 8 3/4" & 9 3/4" are Chrysler rears. The 9 3/4" is the very stout and heavy Dana 60.

A quick 'net search at google.com yielded these helpful links:

A 9 is a 9 in rear end (great variety with rear gear ratios ava)

8.8 is 8.8 (Has a good variety of gear rations available due to it being in the later model Mustang Gt's).

If you are spending the money, get the 8.8 vs. anything smaller you will run into the problems of not being able to build them as strong as an 8.8 or 9in ford. Ask the Chevy people about the 7.5-inch that come in the Z28s and how they rip them out.
Dude

Thanks, guys. I think I've got it now. There are 7.5, 8.0, 8.8 and 9.0 Ford rears plus larger ones used in trucks. The reason for my confusion is based on hearing/reading conversations debating the pros and cons of 8" vs. 9" difs with no mention of 8.8's, plus the fact that many of these web sites completely leave out one or another variation as if it doesn't exist. A case in point is http://www.g-body.org/tnt/diffs/diff-housings.php#ford which ignores the 8.0 totally. Thanks again for the help!
