MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Oil issue continues

Wanted to run one more issue past the group again. I had installed a new spring that I cut off about 3/16" and re-installed and ran the engine several times. Thought it was fixed, but after sitting overnight I want to crank it again and heard the pop as the oil filter blew the o-ring again. Seems like it always happens after it sits overnight.

I spoke to Mark at D&D and he suggested that I pull the value out and check for rust and polish it with steel wool. I pulled the value and no rust or spots on the valve. I polished it with 000 steel wool and re-installed the valve. Ran the engine and it ran about 50-60#. Went out the next day and blew the o-ring again. I am running 30w oil to break the engine in. I have the Flotec adapter and it can be seen on the attached link on the last picture. I pulled the spring out again and re-installed and ran it about 15-20 miles with no issue. It was still on the high side running about 50-60#.

Someone suggested going to a round ball and I have an email to the company in the UK to see if they have one for the Flotec.

Any suggestions as I am running out of ideas??? I am going to change to oil and stay with the 30w for about another 75-100 miles and then go to 10-30w. I am wondering if I need to switch now to the lighter weight. The pressure seems to drop a few pounds after it warms up, but not what I think would be normal for the 215. Any additional ideas???

I know you have it in there and everything is beauitful, but had you considered switching to a regular buick oil pump head and attaching your remote lines to one of those adapters that spins onto the original oil pump head?

Maybe that flotec head has issues?
Justin

Your problem appears to be a tigh fit. When cold the rleif valve gets stuck, when warm it's ok. Perhaps you should bore the hole just a bit to ensure a free movement of the valve.
Take the whole thing off the engine and eximine the parts, correct as necessary.

Its a work of art Jeff, much nicer than mine!

I think its a case of a dud flowtech. I guess it must happen to someone sometime. It bites, but given the amount of time and effort spent, just go buy another one, from someone else. Or try and get an exchange. You could try this, fire it up again, with a bucket on standby. After its done its party trick, undo the oil valve blanking nut and actually see if it's stuck.
Or put the flowtech in a pot of oil on the stove and heat up to 100 degrees and then see it it moves freely. I guess you will have tried a different/new filter?

I've bee following this thread, but I don't remember everything that has been said and done. But one thing that struck me when I looked at your photos (disgustingly beautiful job) is that you may have the lines hooked up backwards on your remote filter (which we can't see). As you know, the output of the oil pump feeds the outside of the filter, flows through and comes out the center of the filter and back to the engine. The filter isn't designed for reverse flow and may stop the flow of oil completely what with the anti-drain back valve, bypass valve (if there is one there) and the oil pushing the filter media outwards to the cannister.

Maybe this is it.

Thanks for all the input and good advice. I called and ordered another valve this AM to see if that might be the issue.

The lines are hooked up correctly. I checked them when I primed the motor and blew out the vasaline out of the pump into a bucket and then hooked up the lines.

I used to run the old base with the screw on adapter, but my car is a 63 and the lines rubbed on the rack and I was always afraid of blowing out a line. That is why I went to the Flotec as it is so much thinner and I have clearance for the rack.

Hopefully the new valve will work, if not, I will pull the pump, major pain and check all aspecks of it or replace it with another one. Thanks again for the input and I hope I can have it ready for Townsend.

What a PITA. Any chance D&D's swivel adapter would fit?

Hang in there, Jeff.

I do not have enough room for the swivel adapter due to being a 63 and it is very, very tight. If the valve does not work, I will pull the unit and see if I can see anything and if not, will need to replace the unit as that is the only thing left to do.

How is the TD coming?
