MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - OT - Land Rover

Sorry to stray off-topic but here goes. I’m thinking about buying a used Land Rover Discovery or Freelander but I am not sure about their reliability. Do any of you have any thoughts on the topic?

Peruse the Rovers North website. They have a decent bulletin board. Http://www.roversnorth.com

The early disco's seem to be more troublesome than the later ones, but they all have their quirks. Rover mechanics will rape and pillage you every time you take the truck to them. It's scary.

We used to have a local Landrover dealership called Viking, very appropriate then ?

Discos were notoriously unreliable, and were pre-BMW. Freelanders were post BMW and Jeremy Clarkson extracted a promise from the factorymeister that he could burn his house down if he bought one and it broke down. I hope he had good insurance as the Freelander turned out to be not much better than the Disco. Since then some engines have an oil pump where the vanes are held on to the shaft with a lock-nut instead of something more positive, and there have been a spate of problems where the nut comes loose, eventually the vanes come free of the square shaft and stop pumping oil, and the engine is wrecked within minutes, resulting in a bill to the owner (not Ford) of £7k/$13k - http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/reports/transport2.shtml

Yikes! Looks like I should give up on this idea and get a Subaru or something. I need AWD about 1% of the time but when I do it's for real. The driveway to our house in the mountains is challenging in good weather but treacherous in bad and we visit there maybe 3 times per year. I want to replace my 240SX daily driver with an AWD something that will be reliable, fairly economical but without a reputation for emptying checking accounts. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

If you can work on the vehicle yourself, you won't get hammered quite so badly on repairs. The driveline is straight forward. The air suspension is problematic, but can be replaced with regular springs for I think around $600. Blowing a differential sucks. I think it's a Dana axle, but I'm not sure. Everything in a range rover is electric, and when something breaks they can really nail you to a wall.

So I guess the only place where they can really get you is electrical stuff, and if your transfer case goes out. (And both happen in these vehicles)
