MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Out of the fireplace!
At long last my coil over front suspension is being fitted, it has been sitting in my fireplace for several months until I hopefully resolved the problem of the excessively stiff steering. With the front end dismantled it became obvious that the Argentinian rack was to blame, every thing else moved freely once the rack was disconnected and the rack alignment itself, seemed ok. We've got the new crossmember and suspension fitted this afternoon and boy does it look good, if it rides and handles as well as it looks I will be delighted. I have also fitted the Brown and Gammons castor reduction kit, and hopefully this will also reduce the excessive weight in the steering I had before. It was an easy fit as the replacement crossmember was off the car and being built up with the new suspension ready to be fitted in one lump. Heres a couple of shots of work in progress, should be finished on tuesday http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/castletine/P40600 http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/castletine/P4060005.jpg06.jpg Kevin Jackson, 75GT V8 Conversion |

And heres a shot which shows the new paint colour really well. Paint is the darkest shade of Jaguar Alpine Green, it's a metallic two pack paint and I think really suits a GT. Kevin http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/castletine/P4010004.jpg |

Kevin, Your car looks awesome. Cheers Pete |

Thanks guys, I am still amazed by the paint colour and how it reveals all the subtle contours of the GT's body. Getting the bodywork and paint done has renewed my enthusiasm to get the current improvements completed. Another shot. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e258/castletine/P4010001.jpg. Kevin |

Kevin Car looks great and I like your colour choice. I'm doing a GT right now but keeping the 4 cyl for now. I'm looking at a silver colour, I think the GT in silver would look good and your colour adds to my enthusiasm for that colour. Great job Kevin!!! |

Gil. Thanks for comments, I have seen a GT done in silver and it looked very good. There are of course many shades of silver and I'm sure it will take you as long as it did me, to make that final decision. Good luck with your car. Kevin |

Picked up the car this afternoon and what a difference, the steering is much lighter with the old but reconditioned rack installed and probably the Brown & Gammons de-castor kit is helping as well. The new moss suspension with blue poly bushes feels much more precise and not as jiggly as some had suggested. I only had a short drive to test the steering and can play with the damper settings at the weekend to try and achieve a good ride/handling compromise. The main point is that the car steering wise is so much more drivable, it was a real struggle before with the Argentinian rack and spoilt the driving experience completely. We did have one problem whilst installing the suspension, in that when tightening up one of the nuts on the top wishbone fulcrum the threaded end snapped clean off, and we were not overtightening it. I rang Moss who were most helpful, and even though I wasn't the original purchaser of the kit which I bought unused, agreed to send a replacement fulcrum out to me free of charge, which arrived next day so can't complain about that for service. I am goin to get the tracking reset and will report back after a more extensive drive. Kevin. |
