MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Performance Cam

Using Piper 270/2 at the moment. Fairly soft!
Would like to boost top end power.
Any Ideas?

Mark,

Go for bottom end power, I bought an offset cam gear which increases torque, the Rover V8 engine is not a great revver, but pulls like stink, take advantage of this (I managed to twist halfshafts with mine).

Michael
Its top end power that Im after. I dont mind losing some bottom end if I can gain at the top.

Piper 285 Cams work very well in B Series engines. I have a Rovercraft Cam in my V8 which i think is very similar spec to the 270. Piper Cams are based in Kent, they have a support line, i'm sure they would make some recomendations for you.

Mark, I have a 1974 Crane Cams book with 4 grind specs for the 215 B-O-P engine, could do a copy if of interest...

Real steel have one they call the TYPHOON, quoted rev range 1200-6000 IT WORKS!!
Russell

Real Steel has Typhoon for fast road use, and Viper Hurricane as mild road cam. From what I heard, the mild type is recommended. For top end the Typhoon seems to be the one to go for. Could you give us an impression why it is top end power that you want?

I am using the car more and more for track days and am running flat out a lot of the time. Could do with more power in the 4000 - 6000 rev range.
I was wondering if anyone had first hand experience of 'hot' cams.

Sorry Mark going to hijack your post a bit...

Got an Iskendrian (Isky) cam untested in my 215. Was supposed to have been in the TR8 works cars. Anyone know what I'm going to get with it? Maybe a suitable choice for Mark.

I have a Isky 262 in my 3.9 rover B I feel I am getting 200 hp? The idle is not lumpy plently of get up and go. I also have stock 3.9 rear end and ltt trans with .83 fifth gear.Other parts as follows stock 215 intake, Elderbrock 1404 4 barrel carb,Rv8 headers.I know the Ford goes bat out of hell but for me this is all the power I want.I also believe there is nothing wrong with 400 hp its just not for the faint of heart.Yes I know you dont always have to use it.

Competition cams makes several grinds for the BOP 215. I ran the hottest one in a high compression Buick with a 600 cfm Holley and long equal length headers. It was very impressive in terms of top end, though I never could get a smooth idle with it. Sounds like just what you are looking for.

Don't forget about Crower. They have at least 8 grinds for 215/3.5/3.9/4.2/4.6/300 motors from 246 to 284 degree with up to 512 lift.

I have a 276 with 488 lift in my 308 CI & it is still pulling hard at 5000 rpm, which is as far as I am going without a few more miles & better tires.

Advertised range 1800-6000 rpm. A little lumpy at idle, but not bad, & very drivable on the street.

Contact D & D for specs & recommendations.

Mark,

I've been racing for nearly ten years with standard cams in 3.5 and 3.9 engines. Your cam should work in the rev range you quote - what exhaust are you using and have you considered modified heads. I don't thick you'll gain much changing the cam if you have standard BV8 heads - and you might have to get the heads modified if you change to a cam with more lift than the piper.

Regards,

Dave

Thanks to everyone.

Dave
I already have modified heads by Peter Burgess and am using the RV8 manifods and single silencer.

I think Ill probably try the Typhoon cam and maybe roller rockers.
I suppose the next step then would be a capacity increase to 4.6

Good choice for Revs through the whole range, in a TR8 coupe [ approx 1120kgs]4.6litre it was more than I needed, Friends refused to get in the car.
